Just a friendly reminder

JUST IN: The North Carolina Forest Service says the statewide burn ban will remain in place until further notice! Despite some rain this weekend, persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits over the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches or more of rain.

“While the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near enough to reduce our wildfire risk,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Even the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is the best option right now.”

Western North Carolina: The debris left behind by Hurricane Helene has significantly increased the volume of available forest fuels compared to 2025, creating a high-risk environment for ignition.

Coastal Areas: Record-low water levels have triggered intense fire behavior. In these regions, ground fires, which burn organic matter beneath the surface, are expected to persist as a chronic, long-term problem.

The Piedmont: The region saw a sudden surge in activity over the weekend, with 87 new wildfires.

April is a time to focus on safety, prevention, and protecting what matters most—our families, homes, and community. As we move into warmer weather, we want to remind everyone that small actions can make a big difference in preventing emergencies.

🔥 Key Safety Reminders for April:
• Check and test your smoke alarms—working alarms save lives
• Practice your home escape plan with your family
• Use caution with outdoor burning and follow all local regulations
• Keep grills and fire pits a safe distance from structures
• Stay alert while driving—watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency vehicles

Our crews are here for you 24/7, but your awareness and preparation are the first line of defense.

Let’s work together to keep Southern Shores safe this spring.

If you have questions about fire safety, prevention tips, or would like to schedule a station visit or alarm check, don’t hesitate to reach out.

🏆 Join us in congratulating Sergeant Thomas Long of Southern Shores Police Department on a Lifesaving Award presented by Chief of Police Mike Palkovics. Last week we caught up with Sergeant Long to present him with his award.

On July 15, 2025, Officer Diego Ramirez of the Kitty Hawk Police Department responded to a medical emergency at the Harris Teeter in Kitty Hawk, where a 65-year-old woman was found unconscious and in cardiac arrest on the sidewalk. Officer Thomas Long of the Southern Shores Police Department, who was nearby, also responded after hearing the call.

Upon arrival, the officers found citizens Rebecca Pugh and Michelle Farrow already performing CPR. Officer Ramirez immediately took over chest compressions while Officer Long retrieved and deployed his Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Together, they continued life-saving efforts until personnel from Dare County EMS and the Kitty Hawk Fire Department arrived and assumed care.

Thanks to the rapid response and coordinated efforts of the citizens, officers, and emergency responders, the patient regained a pulse and began breathing. She was subsequently transported by Med-Flight to Norfolk for further medical treatment. Though the patient sadly passed away three days later, she did so surrounded by her family—time that was made possible by the early intervention on scene.

We greatly appreciate the relationships we share with neighboring public safety agencies in our community. Today, we honor Sergeant Thomas Long of the Southern Shores Police Department for his quick, decisive actions.
