🏅 Southfield Shines at the Detroit Senior Olympics! 🏅

Congratulations to our Southfield participants on an outstanding showing at this year's Detroit Senior Olympics!

🏐 Team Detroit, champions of our Senior Bounce Volleyball League (sponsored by the Detroit Area Agency on Aging), earned 1st Place in Bounce Volleyball.

♠️ Several of our weekly Bid Whist players also had a strong performance, capturing 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place finishes in their division.

🏃‍♀️ Senior Services Coordinator Angie Verges earned 3rd Place in her age group in the 400-meter run with a time of 2:11.

♟️ We also congratulate our chess instructor, Sandra Mayberry, for competing in the Chess division and representing Southfield.

We are proud of everyone who participated and showcased the spirit of active aging, lifelong learning, and friendly competition.

A special thank you to Detroit Parks & Recreation for organizing another fantastic Detroit Senior Olympics. We appreciate the opportunity for our Southfield seniors and staff to participate, compete, and connect with others from across the region.

Park Adventures Update

The Park Adventures walk scheduled for Thursday, June 11 at Carpenter Lake Nature Preserve has been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Park Adventures are planned to resume on Thursday, June 18 at Berberian Woods Nature Reserve.

Looking to stay active tomorrow? The Southfield Pavilion is open for indoor walking from 7 AM to 6 PM, offering a comfortable, air-conditioned alternative to the summer heat.

We're currently looking for both team captains and individual players for Southfield Parks & Recreation's new Adult Flag Football Summer League.

Don't have a full team? Individual players are welcome and may be placed on a team as registrations are received.

League Highlights:
• Men's & Co-Ed leagues
• 6-game season + championship
• Sundays beginning June 28
• Open to all skill levels
• Non-contact, officiated play

🧶✨ Did you know we have a weekly Knit Club that uses crafting to make a difference?

The Giving Stitch brings together community members ages 12 and up to knit, crochet, and create handmade items for those in need.

It's a great opportunity to learn new skills, meet fellow crafters, and give back to the community one stitch at a time.

Tomorrow, our Senior Bounce Volleyball League champions, Team Detroit (sponsored by the Detroit Area Agency on Aging), will represent Southfield at the Detroit Senior Olympics!

We're also proud to cheer on Sandra Mayberry, our senior chess instructor, as she competes in the Chess division.

The Detroit Senior Olympics brings together adults age 50+ from across the region to participate in athletic and social competitions that promote health, wellness, active living, and community connections.

Please join us in wishing Team Detroit and Sandra the very best as they represent our community in this longstanding celebration of friendly competition and active aging.

🏀 Ready to take your game to the next level this summer?

Southfield Parks & Recreation is partnering with the Reggie McKenzie Foundation to offer Youth Basketball Camp at Beech Woods Recreation Center. Designed for ages 7-18, this camp combines daily skill development, 5-on-5 play, and positive mentorship in a fun and supportive environment.

Participants will work on:
• Shooting and ball handling
• Passing and defense
• Game strategy and teamwork
• Confidence and leadership on and off the court

Whether your child is new to the game or already plays on a team, this camp offers a full week dedicated to developing basketball skills while making new friends and having fun.

Looking for a different summer camp experience? Youth Basketball Camp provides a focused basketball environment that complements Southfield's traditional summer camp offerings.
