Haven’t picked up your free food scrap starter kit yet? More chances are coming this August.

The City of Southfield’s food scrap composting program provides free starter kits to all Southfield residents, making it easy to collect food scraps at home and keep them out of the landfill. No registration is required. Just show up during any of the dates below and a kit is yours.

All pickups take place at the Southfield Public Library (26300 Evergreen Rd, Southfield, MI 48076):

Tuesday, August 4, 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Monday, August 10, 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Thursday, August 13, 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Tuesday, August 18, 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Monday, August 24, 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Wednesday, August 26, 2026 from 4 to 6 p.m.
Kits are free for all Southfield residents while supplies last. Staff will be on hand to answer questions about the program.

Residents, it’s time to clean out the garage!

In recognition of National Garage Sale Day, the City of Southfield is waiving garage sale permit fees and registration requirements from Aug. 2–9, 2026.

Take advantage of the opportunity to host a garage sale, find new homes for unwanted items, and connect with your neighbors—all without the usual permit fee.
Garage Sale Week: Aug. 2–9
National Garage Sale Day: Saturday, Aug. 8
Garage Sale Hours: 8 a.m.–8 p.m.

Please remember:
• Signs may only be placed on private property.
• Signs are not permitted in public rights-of-way.
