Members of the New Marlborough Volunteer Fire Company, in partnership with Bilmar Veterinary Services in Great Barrington, will hold a Rabies Clinic from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, at the New Marlborough Fire Station on Norfolk Road in Southfield.

In addition to veterinarians and clinicians from Bilmar, New Marlborough Town Clerk Kathy Chretien will be on hand to issue dog licenses for pet owners who still need to acquire them.

Massachusetts law requires all dogs and cats to be vaccinated against rabies. We ask that all dogs be on a leash and that all cats be in a carrier. If possible, please bring proof of previous rabies vaccination so we may extend the vaccination length from 1 year to 3 years.

The cost at the Clinic is $10 per vaccination, with proceeds going to support the Thomas Crawford New Marlborough Emergency Services Scholarship.

For more information, please contact David Smith, President, New Marlborough Fire Co., at (413) 229-0291, or Windyann Merrill, Office Manager, Bilmar Veterinary 413-528-1180.

As the weather continues to stay cold and snow remains on the ground, NMFR would like to offer a few valuable tips to keep you and your loved ones safe.

- Cold masks exertion: It is easy to overexert yourself without realizing it in low temperatures.

- Snow consistency matters: Heavy, wet snow is much more taxing on the body than fluffy snow.

- Proper technique: Shoveling and twisting often leads to back injuries.

- Maintenance: Remember to eat, hydrate, and warm up regularly.

- Maintain vents and chimneys: Be sure to clear the areas around the exhausts from your household, dryer vents, and ensure chimney cleaning is performed.

At 7:55PM on Friday, January 16th, NMFR was dispatched to Gedney Farm for a possible structure in the lodging building. A first alarm was quickly struck for a working structure fire, bringing in mutual aid from numerous surrounding departments.

Thanks to a coordinated effort with our mutual aide partners, the fire was contained and damage limited to some of the guest rooms.

This fire was determined to have started due to improper disposal of hot ashes from a fireplace. NMFR would like to remind our community to follow best practices for disposal of hot ashes. These ashes can remain hot for several hours, causing a fire.

NMFR wishes to thank the numerous mutual aid agencies that responded to this incident.

Last evening, our members were joined by Monterey Fire Department for a presentation from Hartford Healthcare's LIFE STAR team at our station. This presentation was a great opportunity for our new and veteran members to learn more about the services LIFE STAR provides to our communities, and best practices for us to assist their crews on an emergency scene.

This presentation was followed up by a live landing in town. Members were able to tour the Eurocopter EC-145 operated by LIFE STAR and learn about the onboard capabilities of it's medical crew and the role our members will play on scene.

LIFE STAR provides life-saving Critical Care Air Medical Transport services for our community and neighbors in the event of serious incidents.

NMFR wishes to thank the LIFE STAR team for their time and invaluable training last night!
