PLEASE NOTE: At 4:00 PM today, Friday, April 24, the Southfield Fire Department along with the Southfield Police Department will be honoring the staff at Ascension Providence Hospital Southfield. We will be joined by several other Police, Fire and EMS agencies from around Metro Detroit as we conduct a "Solidarity Lap" around the hospital complex to show our support and appreciation for all of the work they are doing to combat the COVID outbreak. Emergency vehicles will begin staging at the OCC Southfield campus parking lot around 3:30 PM and will depart at 4:00 PM. Be advised, eastbound 9 Mile Road will be temporarily closed at Rutland Drive during the convoy. The intent of this message is to inform the public of the increased presence of emergency vehicles in the area as to not cause any unnecessary alarm or concern. There will not be an opportunity for the general public to get "up close and personal" with emergency vehicles during this event.

ACTIVE RESCUE: Now that we have your attention, let's focus on some happy news today... Around 10:30 this morning, Fire Headquarters took a call from a concerned citizen about some baby ducks that had fallen down a storm drain in front of a business along Northwestern Highway. In typical SFD fashion, we responded. Under the direction of LT. McKee, our 3 newest Firefighters (PFF Stempien, PFF Haning and PFF Curtis - with this being only their second week on the job at the SFD) had to develop a plan of action to complete the rescue. We're happy to report that all 10 ducklings were successfully rescued and reunited with their mother and seem to be doing fine. #HappyTails #SFDRescue #SFDTRT

With all of the bad news circulating about the COVID-19 pandemic (infection & death rates) we were pleasantly surprised to see this message posted to our crews at Ascension in the ER. To date, 42 of the COVID-19 patients the SFD has transported to their facility have been DISCHARGED and are now RECOVERING! We’ll gladly take these small victories while we continue to fight. #SFDFightsToTheEnd #NotTodayCOVID

We are very appreciative when our business partners in the community look out for us. Please take a moment to read this statement from Chief Menifee about one random act of kindness.

Yesterday, we received a phone call from the owner of The Original Pancake House on 10 Mile Road. He said they were closing due to the health crisis and wanted to donate his food to the SFD. Today we picked up about 20 dozen eggs, 20 lbs of Bacon, bags of cheese, veggies for omelettes, Etc. We are very thankful. This donation will provide meals for all 5 stations multiple times. This act of kindness goes a long way for our members during this difficult time.

We are truly thankful,

Chief Menifee

We are very fortunate to have business partners in the community that allow us to utilize their facilities for training. This week, the SFD Training Division utilized the Best Western Premier Detroit Southfield Hotel’s vacant 5 story building as we hosted several of our OAKWAY Fire Departments for high rise training. We successfully reviewed fire alarm systems, size up, fire service elevator control and initial tactics and hose deployment in a smoke filled environment with over 80 firefighters. Check out some of the pictures below of our training. #SFDTraining #OAKWAYStrong

911 OUTAGE UPDATE: As many of you have heard by now, there was an interruption in 911 services around metro Detroit last night. While some areas are still experiencing an outage, at this time, it appears 911 service for the City of Southfield and Lathrup Village is fully operational. Residents can still call 911 to access emergency services. If anything changes, we'll let you know.

Which one do you think would be easier for us to locate if there’s a fire? Help us help you! Please clear a 3 foot area around fire hydrants that have become buried under the snow.

Just a friendly reminder to check on those hydrants! You know the snow pile at the end of your driveway after the plows go by? That’s the same pile that can make it difficult for us to access a hydrant! Please help us by digging out any fire hydrants around your home.

8 MILE & LAHSER ROAD WATER MAIN BREAKS UPDATE!

Please be advised that three water main breaks have now occurred at 8 Mile & Lahser Road. Crews are currently onsite working to fix the problems. Residents in the area may experience discolored water during this time; however, it is still safe for consumption. While water does not need to be boiled since it is not contaminated, residents may opt to do so as a precaution. Lahser Road just north of 8 Mile Road is closed to northbound traffic due to the water main break. Southbound Lahser Road remains open to traffic in the work zone area. Motorists should expect the northbound section of Lahser Road to remain closed until mid next week. Water main repairs are expected to be completed by today (1/17/20); however, new concrete on northbound Lahser will not be cured and open to traffic until approximately Wednesday, January 22 . More information will be forthcoming as it is available. In the interim, please call the Water Dept at (248) 796-4850 with any additional questions.

Although we’re happy to see a 27% decrease in fire fatalities last year, 102 deaths is still 102 too many. Remember to take some simple steps to protect you and your loved ones:

- Have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and in all sleeping areas.

- Know 2 ways out of every room and practice home fire drills with every member of the family.

- Close Before You Doze. Closing your bedroom door at night can help protect you if a fire occurs while you are sleeping.

For more fire safety tips you can contact our Fire Prevention Bureau at (248) 796-5700.

In #Michigan, in 2019, 102 people in lost their lives in residential fires. These numbers sadly include 16 children. Closing the door when you sleep, having working smoke alarms, and practicing a way out can increase your chances of survival. #family #safety #weekendactivity

Message from the Chief~

Gratefulness. That’s what I felt when I woke up from rotator cuff surgery last week. My surgeon expected to find a worst-case scenario that would have taken me from the Department and City I love for many weeks. Instead, the news he gave me and my family was that the surgery was a fraction of what was expected medically and I will be back in the saddle at the start of the new decade.

Gratefulness is a theme I want to stay with for my annual holiday greeting. I am grateful for this incredible City that boasts numerous cultures. It’s why my family and I prefer to say Happy Holiday season, as we honor and celebrate all religions and their observances.

As a City we have many gifts. We are truly blessed to have the support of wonderful citizens, business partners, government and guests.

I am grateful to be part of this family of Southfield. What a decade your fire department has had. There has been a great deal of change. Change can be difficult, but often for the better. This year, alone we have 25 new firefighters with five more coming in the near future. But we have lost a great deal of experience though retirements. I’m so thankful for the service of those who’ve left the fire service. They will be missed, but as with all change—we must and will find our way.

Later this summer we will be commissioning a minimum of 10 new pieces of apparatus. 1 new ladder truck, four engines, five life trucks and several utility vehicles to better serve our residents. We have new programs that we will be unveiling to continue to strengthen our community outreach and in-reach so that our citizens have more opportunities for engagement and learning.

Our connections to our allies remain strong. Because of the cooperation of Oakway and MABAS our reach goes beyond our City borders to help others, as we have welcomed the help of departments from neighboring municipalities. We thank them for their gift of service and friendship.

The Southfield Fire Department is not an island. We are buoyed by the support of other departments, including Dispatch which is often the first gateway of our connection to our citizens. I am always amazed at the step-up—the ability for everyone to work together and step-up and beyond when duty calls and need is evident. We work hand in hand with our Police Department. The Human Resources Department has been a stellar partner. The list is long, but know that SFD appreciates the help and support we enjoy from everyone who works in and outside of City Hall.

The decade and this last year have seen heartbreak as we have suffered illness and loss. But we’ve also seen children grow up and go off to college. We’ve had weddings. We’ve had promotions. We’ve had joy. There will always be sadness, but it’s the joy that gives us the hope for a new decade. It is hope that allows us to forge ahead and seize opportunity that makes us better as people and professionals.

I am sentimental this last holiday season of the decade. I see how much we have gotten done and see how much we can still get done and my heart is full.

I will open the new decade with a promise to look for ways to improve personally and professionally. I ask that we all look for ways to care for one another with the heart and the spirit of giving and gratefulness.

As we close the book on this last holiday season of the decade, a new chapter opens and I am grateful.

Happy holiday season to you all,

Chief Johnny Menifee

Heads Up, Southfield Drivers: School is Back in Session! Here’s a reminder from our friends at Southfield Public Schools of what to do when you come across a School Bus picking up or dropping off students... #FlashingRedKidsAhead

Students will be heading back to school Monday, August 26, 2019. It's a good time to review the state law on passing school buses that are stopped to load and unload children.

ALL lanes of traffic must stop for a stopped school bus. This applies to both vehicles approaching from the rear and from the opposing lanes unless the opposing lanes of highway are divided with a center median.

Let's keep our students and drivers safe!

hi, saw the decon set up, do you a protocol for using it, it looks pretty innovative
My mother just made my day. Back in July I lost my late grandfather's badge. I always carried it in my wallet. I live in Grand Rapids now, and the badge is from the Southfield Fire Department. So basically across the state. Someone turned it in to the fire chief during a recent MLK walk. And I'm going to get it back! Sorry, I'm excited. Mad props to the fire chief and the kind person that returned it. I wish I knew who you were, I'd buy you lunch. And thanks to the chief for digging through my grandfathers pension info to find my mom. #SouthfieldFireDepartment #BraveEveryDay
