Welcoming Our New Chaplain

The Southport Police Department is pleased to welcome Rev. William G. Nickrand, Pastor of Southport United Methodist Church, as our new department chaplain.

Rev. Nickrand will serve alongside our officers and staff, providing spiritual support, encouragement, and a listening ear during both the challenges and celebrations that come with serving our community.

More storms are forming across central Indiana early this evening. Main concern is for the cluster of storms moving in from IL which could bring a threat of severe if it keeps it's steam. Elsewhere, isolated storms could produce brief heavy rain and strong gusts with lightning.

The Southport Police Department extends its thoughts and prayers to the two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers who were shot in the line of duty this afternoon while serving a search warrant on Indianapolis’ west side.

We are grateful to learn that both officers are reported to be in stable condition, and we pray for their continued healing and a full recovery.

Incidents like this are a solemn reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face each day while serving their communities. We stand alongside our brothers and sisters at IMPD, their families, fellow officers, dispatchers, medical personnel, and everyone affected by today’s events.

Please join us in keeping these officers, their families, and the entire IMPD family in your thoughts and prayers.

A complex of storms moving into west-central Indiana this morning. Efficient rainfall rates along with training storms will support the potential for flash flooding over the next few hours. Do not drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don't drown.

An area of strong to severe thunderstorms will continue to move southeast across central Indiana early this morning. Heavy rain/flooding, large hail, and damaging winds are the primary threats. Do not drive where water covers the road.

Cluster of severe storms over central IL will move SE around 40 mph into much of central Indiana along and south of I-74 through the early evening. Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph will be the primary threat along with locally heavy rainfall leading to minor flooding.

Flash flooding can develop quickly, and water levels can change in the blink of an eye. Keep these three simple steps in mind to stay safe when heavy rain threatens your area:

1. GET TO HIGHER GROUND: Move out of low-lying areas subject to flooding immediately.
2. DO NOT DRIVE OR WALK INTO WATER: It takes only 6 inches of moving water to knock you off your feet, and even less to cause a vehicle to lose control.
3. STAY INFORMED: Monitor local radar, television, weather radio, internet, or official social media channels for the latest warning updates.

When encountered with flooded roadways, remember: Turn Around Don't Drown!
