You probably havenโ€™t seen this due to the National Weather Service outage, but the Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been extended to include all of Eastern/ Coastal NC until 10PM. The main risk is scattered strong-to-severe storms with damaging winds and some hail. The Watch to the west remains in effect for Central and Western NC until 8PM.

Iโ€™ll continue to do my best to provide updates with the limited information we have from the National Weather Service until further notice due to a widespread warning and watch outage.

Please take notice that the Board of Aldermen will hold a legislative public hearing on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 6 p.m. at the Southport Community Building, located at 223 E. Bay Street, to hear public comment on the consideration of a 15-Month Moratorium on Development Permits for Data Centers. The moratorium will allow time to develop and adopt comprehensive development standards for data centers.

Per G.S. 160D-107, local governments may adopt temporary moratoria following a legislative public hearing. Before the public hearing, the local government will present statements of the conditions necessitating the moratorium, the development approvals subject to the moratorium, the moratorium's termination date, and the actions and schedule proposed during the moratorium.
