By now everyone knows who they are voting for, I want to say thank you for allowing me to serve as your mayor. Win or lose I know that I was able to bring in the funding to repair the dams and get E. BSL and Alton Lennon repaired to today's standards. It's been 2 years into a 3-year project, that's on tract. We have changed ordinances, and more are coming to address stormwater. It's easy to sit and wonder why things take so long, I've done it, but I learned that state laws and rules have to be followed no matter what I think should happen. Again, thank you I hope you get out to vote!!

I have a couple people who want to know answers to a question, that they themself have been told several times. So, 7 years ago hurricane Florence, does everyone who was here remember the devastation that happen in our city, dams and lakes gone, roads washed out, traveling on a dirt road to get around the washouts, and debris everywhere. The city board then did what they had to do to get the city cleaned up, they worked hard and borrowed 2 million dollars from the state, to help with the cleanup. they started trying to get the road repaired and find funds to help rebuild the dams. We were elected and started to work finding the funds to rebuild the dams and get all the roads open, Alston Lennon, and to get E BSL fixed properly. We also learned that the 2 million dollars had to be paid back, we tried to ask forgiveness for the loan, but they said no, so we had to take it out of our fund balance to pay it back. Our fund balance went from 41.44% in 2022 to 3.77% in 2023, We made it clear at the meetings that this would draw a red flag with LGC, and it did. We have brought it to 7.00% this year and cut the budget by 1.2 million this year to bring it up even more. We should also have more funds coming in after the dam project to bring it to the 20% that they like to see. After talking to them, the manager said they understand, but we need to take the steps to help build it up. This also now, put us at the top of the list for grant funding for different projects. When you have storms, cities fall under this because the money they must spend to get their city cleaned up, most of the mountain cities will fall under the same criteria. If you think there will not be more storms, or if you didn't live through Florence or know how FEMA works, it's hard for you to know the red tape and laws that you have jump through to put a city back together. This did not come because of the general fund, like some want to say, the 2.5 million in debts, which is 3.1% of the 79 million the city could spend and will not!!, but it came from the 2 million out of our fund balance to pay back the loan that the LGC looks at. Anyone who may have sit in these seats would have to pay this back and be in the same position. We have worked hard to fix the problems, but you can't fix things overnight, and it can't be fix by just saying it needs to be done this way, we must follow the laws the state gives us.

I would like to share a few things that were sent to me from my opponent's campaign page. 1st thing after 1 1/2 years he wants to talk about an investment that we made for the future, we don't look at the moment but 5 to 10 years down the road what the city may need. 2nd the city does not pay upfront when we have storm events, we must work through the long process with FEMA to get approved, so we can get reimbursed for any repairs that are needed and money approved to tackle the big repairs. You never want to use your own funds because it takes too long to get reimbursed. 3rd My opponent thinks that our seniors should not be able to pay to go on trips, have meals at the community center, exercise, or play games. He thinks our working families should not have a place for after school for their kids, that maintenance should not be done on our parks, so they would need to be shut down. He thinks there should be no Easter egg hunts, no fall festivals, no concerts in the park. These are things that every city, town, county and states do all over the country, they provide services to their communities, they don't make a profit. Our elected officials look at what we do when we are asking for money. I support our seniors, our working families, and our kids, having activities to do in our community. This is how I read his post, doesn't understand how government works, the role of a mayor and he doesn't know the elected officials needed to help bring money into our city. Thank you.

Since I keep getting half-truths posted, let's be clear I've said for 3 years that stormwater needed to be address. Nothing new, but was not addressed in the budget meeting, the very first budget meeting, and I quote I will not vote for an 8-cent tax which was so conveniently left out of a recent post. I'm being told by people who are attacking me that I should not say anything back, that I should be nice. I have let people know that the first meeting in any city is for handling business, and questions don't get answered. People who talk and have problems get handle by the manager. I know of maybe 2 cities in Brunswick County who have a second meeting, a citizens meeting, and we are one of them.
I volunteered for committees and took classes through the chamber to learn about government. I never had to bother any city staff for answers I could learn own my own. My question is it the cities job to teach someone about how government works, waste taxpayers' money for staff to spend hours helping the same person over and over again, answering question that could be found with a little work. Or should staffs time be, to help residents with real problems and addressing the needs, that have been laid out to get done.

There have been quite many accusations, about behind door votes, which is not true, all votes are held in open meetings. If anyone cares to know, because I heard this too, I get paid $1000 every 3 months, which one of the lowest in the county. People are making up things because they don't come to the meetings or they just like making things up. I always said I will come talk to anyone and I even said I that I would hold a special meeting to talk to a group who needed answers, but that was a no show. People who I've met with learned more about items, instead of what they've heard. People knowing the facts have more knowledge, than the ones who can only speculate. The meeting minutes don't lie.

As I read posts there seems to be some kind of mystery, about what we do on the board. All of our minutes are kept, and you can read them. We have meetings once a month and citizen's forum to discuss concerns every 3 months. I have been open, discussed issues with residents, called and met with residents to help. I sit on the rural transportation board to have input on what happens. I go to the monthly mayor's meetings to work together for issues that may affect our community. I have frequent contact with our state legislators for a Constant Avenue of partnership, along with our federal reps. I can't fix the past, but I have worked to make the necessary corrections for the future. I was a no vote on taxes, and I still look for funding that will benefit our city. I have worked with the American Flood Coalition to bring them to our city to help us look for funding and work with our federal legislators. Working for our residents has been an honor, doing this job, I've been able to bring in over 40 million dollars to our city. This is not a part-time job, it demands full-time to meet the needs of the BSL residents. I will have more to talk about later.
