Southport, NC โ€“ SOUTHPORT, NC โ€” The City of Southport has been named the top-voted coastal community in FPTower Inc.โ€™s 2026 Save A Life Raffle, earning the donation of a U Safe remote-controlled, self-propelled rescue lifebuoy valued at approximately $8,000.
The lifesaving device will officially be presented to the City during a special presentation at Waterfront Park in June.
Designed to improve waterfront safety and emergency response capabilities, the U Safe device is a high-speed, remote-controlled rescue buoy engineered to quickly reach swimmers in distress. The self-propelled technology allows first responders to assist individuals in the water while reducing risk to emergency personnel during rescue operations.
โ€œThis achievement reflects the incredible support and engagement of our community,โ€ said Fire Chief Charles Drew. โ€œWe are grateful to everyone who participated in voting and helped bring this important safety resource to Southport.โ€
The Save A Life Raffle, organized by FPTower Inc., utilized a community-driven voting system in which every raffle ticket purchased counted as votes for a nominated coastal community. Southport secured the highest number of votes on the final leaderboard, earning one of only four donated U Safe devices awarded through the initiative. Proceeds from the raffle directly support the organizationโ€™s ongoing educational, research, and restoration efforts.
โ€œWe are not simply preserving Frying Pan Tower,โ€ said Richard Neal, Executive Director, FPTower Inc., "we are transforming it into a platform that advances safety, science, and sustainability for generations to come.โ€
Additional details regarding the public presentation ceremony will be announced at a later date.

Over 300 fire chiefs and fire service members from across the state converged in Raleigh today for North Carolina Fire Service Legislative Day. This was an opportunity for fire departments to come together and speak with a unified voice to our elected leaders at the state level on issues that directly impact the fire service and the communities we serve.

Iโ€™m proud to say Brunswick County was strongly represented by a good group of fire chiefs that made the almost 3 hour drive to Raleigh. Throughout the day, we discussed several key topics currently in the legislative process that directly affect the NC fire service, including:

โ€ข Expanding coverage for firefighter occupational cancer protections
โ€ข Expanding Line of Duty Death (LODD) benefits to include certain occupational cancer-related deaths
โ€ข Increasing the Firefightersโ€™ Pension Fund benefit from $175 per month to $180 per month
โ€ข Reducing the years of service requirement for full retirement benefits from 30 years to 25 years
โ€ข Providing logistical and operational support when fire stations are used as voting locations
- Local legislation on the current fire fee funding mechanism for Brunswick County Fire Departments.

We sincerely appreciate the valuable time we were able to spend with Representatives Charlie Miller and Frank Iler discussing these, and other important matters while advocating for the needs of the Brunswick County fire service.

Unfortunately, we were unable to meet with Senator Bill Rabon due to his hectic schedule as Chair of the Rules and Operations of the Senate Committee.

The fire service was recognized by the General Assembly in the House Chambers. It was also a day of collaboration and networking with our peers in the fire service.

Southport EMS members are appreciated EVERYDAY. However, it is National EMS week. During this week, go out of your way to sincerely thank an EMT or a Medic. Southport has a great TEAM. I am very proud that their average response time during 2025 was 4 minutes and 31 seconds.

2025 our EMS division answered 2120 medical emergencies, transporting 1202 patients.

SFD EMS division average response time in 2025 to Cardiac Arrest Calls (12) - 3:47, Stroke calls (12) - 3:52, and Trauma calls (46) - 6:01.

They also assisted 231 citizens with "Lifting Assistance" calls. This is citizens in our district that had fallen, did not need transport or medical assistance, just needed help to get back to a safe and secure place.

What an amazing job! Our EMS division is led by Capt. Sharon McDaniel, thank you for a job well done!
