More than half of the United States’ wetlands having been lost to agricultural, residential, and commercial development. As a result, degraded water quality, increased storm damage, and depleted fish, wildlife, and plant populations have been occurring all around the country. Because of this, it is beyond important that we preserve our precious wetlands here in Southwick!

Wetlands are the perfect settling area for soil and vegetation that trap sediments that bind and break down pollutants into nontoxic compounds. For example, sediments under marsh vegetation can absorb lead, copper, and iron. The wetlands will then retain the nitrogen and phosphorus compounds that would otherwise foster nuisance plant growth and degrade water quality in fresh and coastal areas. Wetlands provide commodities to many wildlife species as well, including by providing food, breeding areas, and protective cover.

Wetlands are crucial to preserving the livelihoods of Southwick and communities worldwide for many reasons! For starters, low areas in a wetland can act as a flood way to deliver stormwater and floodwater away from buildings or roads that would otherwise be endangered by them. This minimizes the need for extensive and expensive flood management systems. Wetlands are also known to purify the water they receive from roads, agricultural runoff, and other sources, making them an excellent producer of clean drinking water.

Much of the Conservation Commission’s work revolves around the protection of wetlands, but what exactly is a wetland? By definition, a wetland is a land area that contains surface water part or all the time, as well as some adjacent land areas. Beyond what is typically considered a wetland, such as cattail marshes or red maple marshes, the law also considers intermittent streams, floodplains, and other areas that may be dry for a significant portion of the year to be part of the wetland category. Among the different types of wetlands, the most common type is bordering vegetated wetlands (BVWs), which are wetlands that share a border with a stream, pond, or lake.
