Oh, rats… literally.

You may have seen headlines about the recent hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship overseas. While that situation is getting a lot of attention, it's important to know the risk to people here in Utah remains very low. The cruise ship outbreak involved a rare strain (Andes) and close-contact exposure in a unique environment.

Here in Utah, hantavirus is most commonly linked to contact with infected rodents — especially in places like sheds, cabins, garages, barns, or other closed-up spaces. This would be a rodent-to-person transmission, not person-to-person.

The good news? Prevention is pretty simple 👇
• Air out closed spaces before cleaning
• Don’t sweep or vacuum rodent droppings
• Spray droppings with disinfectant first
• Wear gloves when cleaning
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when cleaning up heavy rodent infestations
• Seal holes where mice can get inside
• Keep food sealed and clutter cleaned up

Symptoms can start out feeling like the flu: fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and headaches.

A little rodent prevention now can go a long way toward keeping your home and family safe. 🏡🐀

Tomorrow is the BIG DAY!!

We’ll be kicking off Exercise Wolverine.

Tomorrow’s training is built to test how quickly and effectively Guard members and partner agencies can respond when the homeland is under pressure, from disaster response and support to civil authorities to cyber threats and infrastructure protection.

So, yeah, we are kind of a big deal!

Exercise Wolverine will take place at Camp Williams and surrounding communities, Dugway Proving Ground, the Utah Test and Training Range, Central Utah Water Conservancy District, and the Shops at South Town as forces train to stay ready for the missions that matter most.
