We had a GREAT time with the 5th graders at Grove Creek Elementary in Pleasant Grove last Friday. Thank you students for helping prepare over 200 parachutes with candy to be given to children in hospitals, schools as well as in programs that bring hope and joy to those in need. It was a blast to finish off our day with a "rooftop" candy drop. And we have one question to ask... Who had more fun? The teachers on the roof or the students down below. We could hardly tell they were all grinning so big!! It is so much fun to be a Candy Bomber!!

On a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at West Hills Middle School in South Jordan, a group of visiting German students were gathered for an expected candy drop.

“Today is a very special day. On May 12, the people of Berlin celebrated the end of the Berlin Airlift,” German student Bayan Preis said. “It’s a day when we remember that West Berlin survived.”

Students at West Hills Middle School and the Berlin school both held competitions this year in which students pitched their own idea for a chocolate bar and presented it to classmates, who then voted for their favorite.

Denise Williams, who is a member of the board of directors for The Candy Bomber Foundation and daughter of the late pilot, encouraged students to be a “candy bomber in your own way.”

“You don’t have to be older, you don’t have to wait till tomorrow. You can do something small today,” she said Tuesday. “My father did not plan to become the chocolate pilot. He wasn’t trying to make history; he just had a chance to do one small, kind thing.”

German students join their American counterparts to honor Utahn Gail Halvorsen on the 77th anniversary when the Berlin Blockade ended.

As we look ahead to this week’s Artemis Program launch, we’re reminded that Colonel Gail S. Halvorsen—best known as the “Candy Bomber”—also played a quiet but important role in the early days of America’s space and missile programs. Following his humanitarian service during the Berlin Airlift, Halvorsen contributed to the development and testing of rocket and missile technologies during a pivotal era of innovation. His career reflects the same spirit we see today: combining technical excellence with a commitment to service. As Artemis carries us back to the Moon and beyond, we honor leaders like Halvorsen who helped lay the foundation—proving that hope, ingenuity, and courage can truly lift the world. 🚀

Our Vision for 2026 - and Beyond:

We are thrilled to announce three new programs that will begin in 2026, Camp Soar, Operation Candy Bomber, and Adventure Aerospace. These programs are aligned with Gail’s vision to “Develop community leaders through STEM and aviation who demonstrate the qualities of kindness, gratitude and service before self.”

Camp Soar (Summer Camps)
Designed specifically for 5th-6th graders, these students will become community leaders through field trips, mentoring and hands-on service learning. Students will discover how small acts of kindness make a big impact and build empathy, creativity, and problem-solving skills as they explore community needs and most importantly – take action.

Operation Candy Bomber (4th Grade School Curriculum)
Operation Candy Bomber brings history to life and turns classrooms into launchpads for possibility. Inspired by the legendary candy drops of the Berlin Airlift, this pilot school initiative uses wonder, kindness, and curiosity to spark young minds. Designed to be fully compliant with state and federal educational standards, the program integrates hands-on STEM activities, aviation storytelling, and real-world problem solving into age-appropriate learning experiences.

Adventure Aerospace (Mentoring Students)
Aimed at high school students, Adventure Aerospace will introduce students to aviation, aeronautics, engineering and other aerospace related career fields. Students will build drones, simulated flights and tackle real world challenges in engineering design and aircraft maintenance.

We will be carefully measuring the performance of these programs and will expand to include additional rural students and additional states in 2027 and beyond.

We are thrilled with the progress that has been made during 2025. In a world that seems increasingly more selfish and self-aggrandizing, following Gail’s example of kindness, gratitude, and service before self has never been more important.

We hope you will partner with us moving forward and we hope to earn your continued support.
