The Sparks Police Department consistently demands the highest level of professionalism from its employees. We maintain that employee contact with the public should inspire respect and generate cooperation and approval from the public we serve. The Sparks Police Department is comprised of 152 full time employees that include 109 sworn and 43 civilian personnel. The Department also has over 50 citiz

en volunteers that assist with the daily activities of the department in all four divisions. The Chief of Police oversees the Police Department operations, comprised of four divisions: Administration, Detective, Patrol and the Records Division. A Division Commander/Manger oversees each of the four divisions. The Sparks Police Department formally adopted “ComStat” as a department crime solving model. The Sparks Police Department believes we should aggressively track and solve crime or criminal activity. Each week members of each Division meet to develop a response strategy to address the latest crime trends within the City. The Sparks Police Department also participates in regional law enforcement efforts. These efforts include the Regional Gang Unit, the Repeat Offender Program, the Northern Nevada Law Enforcement Academy, the Regional Street Enforcement Team, DEA taskforce, Regional S*x Offender Notification Unit, Truckee Meadows Citizens Police Academy and the Consolidated Bomb Squad. The Sparks Police Departments motto is “Where Community Comes First,” placing an emphasis on our community involvement. The Sparks Police Department promotes community programs such as the Neighborhood Watch program, the Kids to Seniors Korner and the ALERT program. The Sparks Police Department takes pride in serving our community.

Members of the Sparks Police Department and Washoe County Sheriff’s Office came together at the police academy to teach recruits the ins and outs of media relations.

Recruits learned about working with the media, communicating effectively, and even had the opportunity to hear directly from the news perspective.

Sparks Police had a great time at the FAM (Foster, Adopt, Mentor) Fest at the Marina this weekend! This event supports foster care, adoption, and mentorship in Washoe County. We’re grateful to be part of such a great community event!

Get to Know Your Dispatcher: Paige

Years as Dispatcher
• I am in my final phase of training-Almost done! I've been with SPD for a year and a half.

Motivation
• Knowing that my work makes a real impact. Supporting my officers, firefighters, and community who rely on us.

Career Choice
• I wanted something challenging where I could help others! I like that every day is different and I am constantly learning.

Favorite Holiday
• The 4th of July! I love summertime and my hometown throws a huge celebration for the 4th, so it's always fun!

Pets
• I have a 5 year old Labradoodle named Harvey! I rescued him 2 years ago and it has been an adventure ever since. He is full of energy and lives for his walks!

We’re excited to have Paige as part of the SPD team and can’t wait to see what’s ahead for her!

On August 18, 2026, at approximately 6:27 p.m., the Sparks Police Department responded to the 400 block of Nash Street following a report of a possible domestic disturbance.

Upon arrival, officers learned that the victim may have sustained injuries during the incident and had locked themself inside the residence. Officers also learned that the male involved, later identified as Carlos PINEDA, had thrown a dog over a fence, causing injuries to the animal.

Officers located PINEDA nearby; however, he attempted to flee from officers on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, officers apprehended PINEDA a short distance away and took him into custody.

PINEDA was later booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility on the following charges:

-Domestic Battery, 1st Offense, a misdemeanor

-Animal cruelty 1st Offense, a misdemeanor

-Obstructing, a misdemeanor

The Sparks Police Department has received multiple complaints of traffic issues around Sparks Blvd and Vista Blvd freeway on ramps. The complaints included vehicles running red lights, blocking intersections, method of turning violations and reckless/aggressive driving.

On 8-19-2026, the Sparks Police Traffic unit conducted targeted enforcement at these locations. Officers made 38 traffic stops and issued 39 traffic citations for various offenses in a two-hour period during the morning commute.

The Sparks Police Department acknowledges the traffic related issues at these locations are frustrating for morning and afternoon commuters. We would like to remind everyone that committing these violations further slows the flow of traffic and increases the probability of accidents. The Sparks Police Department will continue to monitor and conduct enforcement operations during commute hours.

The Sparks Police Department’s Support Services Section had a great time visiting Little Golden Goose Preschool for Safety Week! We loved answering all the kids’ great questions, sharing safety tips, and handing out stickers. Thank you for having us!

On 8/14/26 at 11:32AM, officers from the Sparks Police Department responded to the 2000 block of Oddie Blvd. on the report of a robbery. Once on scene, officers learned that a male suspect had entered a local store, concealed multiple merchandise items and left without paying. Store employees and customers confronted the suspect outside of the store. The suspect then struck a store employee, causing minor injuries and fled the area on foot. Using store surveillance footage, officers were able to develop a person of interest, who was identified as Marco Collier Jr. and made attempts to locate him.

On 8/16/26 at 7:57AM, Sparks dispatch received a suspicious person call for service in the area of Wedekind Regional Park at 11 Disc Dr. Due to the terrain in the area, officers utilized a drone to respond and attempt to locate the subject. Based on initial drone footage, officers determined the subject at the park was likely Marco Collier Jr. Officers contacted him and were later able to determine that there was probable cause for his arrest in connection with the robbery that occurred on 8/14.

Collier was taken into custody and booked on the following charges:

Robbery (felony)

Petit Larceny (misdemeanor)
