Making Improvements at the Sparta School Forest — Honoring Joan Cook’s Legacy!

On Saturday, October 17, 2026, a dedicated crew of student and staff volunteers rolled up their sleeves to make some much-needed improvements to the Sparta School Forest!

👏 Special Thanks to Saturday’s crew who included: Ben Carney, Sterling Intihar, Mr. Jared Olive, Mr. Joel Frazee, Mr. Buck Engel, Lincoln Engel and Harry Frazee
Thank you all so much for donating you time and talents to this project!

The materials for the new pavilion roof were purchased with money Joan Cook left to the School Forest when she passed away. Earlier this year, students in Mr. Frazee’s woods classes helped craft Aldo Leopold benches for the school forest using Joan’s gift, while other students helped install a newer, safer fire pit. Approximately 50 students have already benefited from Joan’s gift of learning, and countless more will enjoy these improvements for years to come!

A huge thank-you to Mr. Olive for donating the railroad ties and lending the use of his skid steer.

Thank you to everyone who continues to invest their time, resources, and energy into making the Sparta School Forest a special place for our students.

The Sparta High School Staff has elected Eli Kemp as the Kiwanis Student of the Month for September!! Eli was nominated by Ms. Halberg who shared the following:

"Eli is an outstanding student and human being. He goes out of his way to help his peers understand class content or to help them catch up if they missed instructions. Eli also excels in his work, making sure everything he turns in is completed to the best of his ability. He has a drive to learn about how the world works and to see multiple perspectives. Growing up, Eli overcame many obstacles in his personal life, but he does not let that adversity make him cold. Instead, he uses his struggles to help others and better himself. In addition to his excellent academic rigor, he pushes himself outside the classroom to do the best he can in his extracurricular activities. Evidence of his empathy, determination, and resilience was exuded this past year; Eli suffered an injury at the end of last school year, but he didn’t let that stop him from cheering on his peers and pushing them to do their best in their competition. Furthermore, Eli was named the “Strongest Teen in America” at the Strongman Competition this past summer. The more I learn about him, the more impressed I am at how wonderful a person Eli is." —Ms. Halberg

Hello Hallway Walkers!

High School Hall Walking Badges will be available at Sparta Montessori starting Monday, October 19, 2026. Please note that this is a new location to pick up badges. You can stop by Monday-Friday 8am - 4pm to pick up a badge. Appointments may be made in advance to pick up a badge from 4pm to 5pm.

*Walking will begin on Monday, November 3, 2026, and end Friday, April 30, 2027.
*Halls are open for walking Monday-Friday 4:00pm - 9:00pm
*Halls are closed during school breaks and building closures due to weather.
