Risk factors are characteristics that make it more likely that someone will consider, attempt, or die by su***de. They can't cause or predict a su***de attempt, but they're important to be aware of. Knowing them can help us better support ourselves and others.
Common risk factors include:
- Mental health and substance misuse
- Feelings of hopelessness or isolation
- History of trauma or abuse
- Major life losses (jobs, relationships, health)
- Previous attempts or exposure to su***de
- Stigma or barriers to getting help
Awareness helps save lives. If you or someone you know is struggling, you're not alone. Help is available. Call, text, or chat 988.
