More than 1,200 athletes and hundreds of coaches and family members participated in competitions during the 2026 Special Olympics State Summer Games at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

Cooperatives, including Owen Electric, provided more than 100 volunteers to help events go smoothly. Athletes were treated to tethered hot air balloon rides, courtesy of Kentucky’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives during the morning.

We were proud to host Leadership Owen County for a behind-the-scenes look at the electric cooperative industry and the work that goes into keeping the lights on safely and reliably.

Participants also experienced our Powertown safety demonstration, which highlighted the real-world dangers of electricity and the importance of staying safe around power lines and electrical equipment.

Thank you to Leadership Owen County for spending a portion of their day with us and learning more about the people, technology, and commitment that power our communities every day.
