🌲 Making Improvements at the Sparta School Forest — Honoring Joan Cook’s Legacy! 🔨

On Saturday, October 17, 2026, a dedicated crew of student and staff volunteers rolled up their sleeves to make some much-needed improvements to the Sparta School Forest!

👏 Special Thanks to Saturday’s crew who included:
Students: Ben Carney and Sterling Intihar
Staff: Mr. Jared Olive, Mr. Joel Frazee, and Mr. Buck Engel
Staff Family: Lincoln Engel and Harry Frazee
(Thank you all so much for donating you time and talents to this project.)

🏠 Pavilion improvements included:
Replacing rotting fascia boards
Repairing several holes caused by storm damage
Installing a beautiful new steel roof!

🚜 The crew also improved the school forest entrance to address damage from last fall and winter.

❤️ A special part of this project is the legacy behind it.
The materials for the new pavilion roof were purchased with money Joan Cook left to the School Forest when she passed away. Those who knew Joan remember her as an eternal teacher who was always finding ways to encourage, inspire, and celebrate student learning.
We wanted to honor Joan’s legacy by doing more than making repairs. We wanted to continue her tradition of giving students opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences.
Earlier this year, students in Mr. Frazee’s woods classes helped craft Aldo Leopold benches for the school forest using Joan’s gift, while other students helped install a newer, safer fire pit.

🌱 Approximately 50 students have already benefited from Joan’s gift of learning, and countless more will enjoy these improvements for years to come!

A huge thank-you to Mr. Olive for donating the railroad ties and lending the use of his skid steer with drill, bucket, and brush hog to help with the entrance project.
Thank you to everyone who continues to invest their time, resources, and energy into making the Sparta School Forest a special place for our students.
Joan’s legacy lives on—not just in the improvements we make, but in the students who learn, build, explore, and grow because of them. 🌲❤️
