As of TODAY August 28,2026 new Missouri Senate Bill 1461 states the following:

Drivers who fail to stop for a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended face significantly harsher, mandatory penalties:

First Offense:Fine from $500 to $1,0005 points added to the driver's license
Court-ordered driver's license suspension of 90 days (or as designated by the court)Second Offense (within 5 years): Fine from $1,000 to $2,00090-day driver's license suspensionThird or Subsequent Offense (within 5 years): Fine from $1,500 to $3,000180-day driver's license suspensionInjury and Felony Classifications
Penalties escalate severely if a violation results in harm to a child:Physical Injury: Charged as a Class E felony (up to 4 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000).
Serious Physical Injury or Death: Charged as a Class D felony (up to 7 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000).
Courts are prohibited from suspending the mandatory monetary fines for these violations.

We are currently working with Missouri Department of Transportation and NHTSA to enhance the safety in our community to ensure our roadways are safe by keeping drunk drivers off the pavement!

"I'm fine to drive" is a choice that ruins lives in a split second. 🍺❌

With about 30% of all traffic deaths linked to drunk driving, law enforcement is out in full force to keep our roads SAFE.

Protect yourself and others:
📱 Schedule a rideshare
🚕 Call a taxi
🚙 Have a sober friend drive you home

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

As the last official day of summer, we want to share a few safety reminders with our community…
1️⃣ SLOW DOWN! • obey speed limits, watch for buses, kids, and school zones.
2️⃣ STAY ALERT! • follow the hands free law! Kids can be unpredictable. Watch your surroundings. It’s NOT a suggestion; it’s the LAW!
3️⃣ STOP FOR THE BUS! 🚌 • When the lights are flashing, it’s NOT a suggestion; it’s the LAW! 🛑
4️⃣ BUCKLE UP! • Again, it’s NOT a suggestion; it’s the LAW! Be sure your child is secure before leaving the pick up line!
5️⃣ PLAN AHEAD! • the first week of school is expected to be chaotic with heavier traffic. Give yourself plenty of time & be patient!

We will have extra patrol before and after school to better enhance the safety this week!

Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make this year's National Night Out such a tremendous success!
We are incredibly grateful to our amazing community for spending the evening with us and showing your continued support for the Sparta Police Department.

Events like this remind us how fortunate we are to serve such an engaged community.
