A small ceremony was held at Town Hall on Sunday evening to begin Light the Night week, a nationwide campaign by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. We appreciate the support of the Township and community in recognition of NFFF’s mission to honor America’s fallen firefighters, support their families and work to reduce preventable firefighter death and injury.

On Sunday, 4/12 at 1pm Sparta Fire responded to multiple calls reporting a large brush fire on the wooded hillside between Fairway Trail and Golfview Terrace. Engines 5, 7 and 6 responded and encountered extremely difficult, steep terrain. Multiple mutual aid units from Ogdensburg Fire Department, Andover Township Volunteer Fire Department and Jefferson Township Fire Company #2 operated jointly from the Golfview Ter and Alpine Trail area, protecting homes and fighting the fire from the topside. Sparta crews, assisted by Byram Twp Fire Department, engaged in fire suppression and containment from Fairway Trail. New Jersey Forest Fire Service established a unified command post with Sparta FD and deployed multiple crews.

Sparta Police NJ assisted with crowd and traffic control and deployed their drone to assist in monitoring progress. Sparta Ambulance Squad, assisted by Atlantic Mobile Health and the Sparta FD Ladies Auxiliary provided standby and rehabilitation. Two firefighters were treated for symptoms related to over-exertion with one treated on scene and one transported to Newton Hospital and released shortly after.

Ultimately, the fire was contained to an area covering several acres of steep, wooded hillside and no homes or property were damaged. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Sparta Engine 7 returned to the scene and remained overnight with New Jersey Forest Fire units on fire watch duty.

We extend our sincere thanks to all those who provided assistance, the residents who offered water and opened their homes to the crews, and lastly a special thanks to Jersey Mike's Subs for their generous donation.

Last night shortly before 11pm Sparta Fire was dispatched to Alpine Trail for a reported brush fire involving downed power lines. Chief 1, Deputy Chief 10, Engine 3 and Engine 7 responded. On arrival units determined arcing from downed power lines ignited an unoccupied parked vehicle. Due to the high voltage involved, firefighters were only able to contain the incident until JCP&L arrived and deenergized the area. Once confirmed safe, the vehicle was extinguished.

Sparta Fire responded to several other calls through the night involving downed utility lines. We want to remind everyone that there is no "safe" downed wire, always stay as far away as possible.

Sparta Fire will be conducting a training exercise tonight, March 3rd, at the former 7-11 on Pine Cone Lane beginning at 6:30pm. Please be aware that there will be emergency vehicles and related activity in the area; this is a training exercise only and not a true emergency. We will additionally be utilizing safe, non-toxic smoke from a fog machine just like the ones commonly used for theater and parties. All area roads will remain completely open to traffic.

We appreciate the cooperation of the property owner and contractor in allowing us the opportunity to utilize the building for training prior to it's demolition. This provides our firefighters with a unique opportunity to sharpen skills and train in a real-world environment that is often difficult to simulate.

What a storm!! As you finish clearing your driveways and sidewalks, please remember to remove snow from around the fire hydrants near you. These won’t always be directly in front of a home, but even those between houses are critically important in an emergency so take a walk to those as well. Thank you!

Patrick Decker, a nearly 50 year member of our Department lost his life last week while piloting a plane delivering humanitarian supplies from Florida to Haiti. Pat was Chief of Department in 1996 and had been a pilot for United Airlines for many years. God bless his family and friends as well as those of his fellow pilot who was also lost. We will miss Pat especially at our summer parades. Godspeed, Chief.
