The Town of Sparta is actively working to reopen Highway 21 after state inspectors have deemed the area safe for reopening.

Please note that while the roadway is expected to reopen, the sidewalks and parking spaces in front of the affected businesses will remain closed until further notice. These areas will stay restricted until all windows, doors, and other building features can be properly secured to ensure public safety.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as this work continues. The safety of our residents, visitors, and business owners remains our top priority. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Traffic Update

The section of Main Street between Doughton St and NC Highway 18 will remain closed until state inspectors are able to assess the structural stability of the affected building.

Town crews will work this morning to restore traffic flow on Highway 18, and we are hopeful that the roadway will be reopened by lunchtime.

Once state inspectors have completed their assessment and can advise on the safety and stability of the building and adjacent sidewalk, we will work to reopen this portion of Main Street as soon as possible.

Please note that while some businesses were scheduled to reopen today, access may be limited until the area is deemed safe.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work with state officials to ensure the safety of our residents, visitors, and business owners. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.

Main Street will remain closed this morning to allow the Sparta Police Department to complete their investigation and allow the Building Inspector to assess the stability of the structure.
Please allow extra time when traveling for school or work as you will need to use alternate routes. Side roads may be a little more congested this morning but please show courtesy and grace.
The Town of Sparta would like to say Thank You to all those who courageously battled this fire and all the surrounding departments who lent a helping hand throughout the night.

UPDATE: As of 1:50pm on Monday, August 3rd, all lanes of US HWY 21 between Thompson St. and Grandview Dr are now open.

🚨🚨🚨Update on South Main Street Water Line - as of 1:30 AM, the water line located at South Main Street and Grandview Drive has been repaired. Service has been restored to all customers who were temporarily affected.

US HWY 21 North between Thompson Street and Grandview Drive will continue to remain a one-lane road until further notice. Due to the current weather conditions and the location of the water line in comparison to the right lane, the decision was made to close one lane until further notice. Town officials will consult with NC DOT to ensure the safe restoration of the road's shoulder to ensure public safety before reopening the right lane. Please use caution in the intersection, as the work area is still open until weather conditions improve, allowing public works staff to seal the right shoulder fully. We thank you for your patience as we continue to work on the issue.
