**July National Fire Outlook**

Fire activity increased across the United States in June, accelerating significantly during the second half of the month. The Great Basin, Rocky Mountain, and Southwest areas experienced the most notable increase in activity.

As of June 30, more than 3.16 million acres had burned nationwide, 157% of the previous 10-year average. More than 36,000 wildfires have been reported so far this year, also above average.

The National Preparedness Level increased to Level 4 on June 29, reflecting elevated national demand for wildfire resources. This outlook underscores the importance of preparedness, coordination, and a ready incident management workforce as fire season intensifies.

The Ferris Fire is putting on another explosive show this afternoon, with a towering plume dominating the skies over southwest Colorado.

51,521 acres 21% Contained

As expected, fire behavior has intensified this afternoon in the Dolores River Canyon. The most active fire behavior is currently centered about one mile north of Bradfield Bridge and farther north in Glade Canyon, where crews continue working aggressively to slow the fire’s advance.

Firefighters have prepared portions of Forest Service Road 504 and the Tri-State Transmission Line corridor to serve as potential control lines. If conditions allow, crews may conduct strategic burnout operations along those prepared lines to create a wider buffer and help stop the fire from spreading farther north and east.

Heavy helicopters and Super Scooper aircraft are actively supporting firefighters on the ground, while large air tankers remain on call if additional retardant drops become necessary.

The National Preparedness Level increased to 4 (PL4) today, June 29, as significant wildland fire activity is occurring across multiple geographic areas, resulting in a substantial commitment of incident management teams.

The National Interagency Coordination Center is increasingly coordinating with geographic area coordination centers to prioritize and fill resource orders for all national resources, with a heavy demand being placed on lower-activity geographic areas to provide available resources.

Forecasts also indicate a continued high potential for new large fires to emerge across multiple geographic areas in the coming days.

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service is devastated to share that three wildland firefighters lost their lives on Saturday, June 27, as part of an interagency response to the Knowles and Gore fires along the Colorado-Utah border. Additionally, two crew members were injured in the line of duty and have been transported to a hospital.

Our immediate focus is on supporting their families, friends, and fellow crewmates during this incredibly difficult time.

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service stands united with the USDA Forest Service in grief and in our unwavering support for the loved ones left behind. Their bravery, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The National Interagency Fire Center has released the June 2026 Wildland Fire Potential Outlook, highlighting areas across North America where significant wildfire activity is expected to be above normal, near normal, or below normal this month. The outlook is an important planning tool for Incident Management Teams, emergency managers, fire agencies, and public safety professionals as they prepare for the 2026 fire season. The June outlook indicates elevated fire potential across portions of the western United States and other areas experiencing drought, dry fuels, and below-average snowpack conditions.
