🧪Can you bring a penny back to shine?

Mrs. Whitaker’s Chemistry students put the scientific method to work with a hands-on penny experiment! Students chose their solutions and investigated how different materials - including vinegar, baking soda, borax, hydrogen peroxide, water, and salt affected pennies over 24 hours.

Along the way, they explored oxidation, the chemistry of pennies, and even the connection between pennies and the Statue of Liberty (why is it blue🤔).

Science isn’t something SHS students just learn, it’s something they see, test, and discover!

Mrs. Holt’s Biology 1 students are getting hands-on with carbon compounds as they work together to model how atoms are rearranged during different cellular reactions.

Using chalk markers on their tables, students are building three different carbon compounds and tracking where the atoms go, which atoms are reused, and which new atoms need to be added along the way.

It’s a collaborative way to visualize what happens to the matter in the food we eat and better understand how our bodies transform and reuse those building blocks.
