USC Upstate Library https://linktr.ee/uscupstatelibrary At that time the holdings of the library totaled 9,607. Construction of a new building began in 1976.

The University of South Carolina Upstate Library began in a small room located on the first floor of the Spartanburg General Hospital nursing residence in 1967. Increasing enrollment and lack of physical space, the Library was moved in the Spring of 1968 to the basement of what was formerly the Spartanburg County Health Department. The USC Upstate campus began in the fall of 1969 with one building

– the current Stockwell Administration Building. In addition to housing the Library, the building was designed for classrooms and office space. The project took one year to complete and classes were held in the building for the first time In January 1977. Over the years, the library has been remodeled as services and programs changed to meet the needs of the students. As of the 2014-2015 academic year, the library's volume count is 243,116 with more than 200 databases.

For this Throwback Thursday post we wanted to share an article and photo from the September 19, 1967 Spartanburg Herald. This article is about our campus opening its doors for the first time in 1967 with 171 students enrolled. The article photo has USC Spartanburg director Dr. Norbert Stirzaker and History Professor John B. Edmunds Jr interacting with some of the very first students. Hard to believe the campus had less than 200 students at some point. Good luck to all our students making it through their first week!

The library is dedicating this week's Throwback Post to remind everyone about the "Movie Anniversary Milestone Display!" This display includes movies from our collection that are reaching a anniversary milestone in 2026. The display will be up for a few more weeks and all the movies are available for checkout. The library also has external USB port DVD Drives for laptops if you don't have your own DVD player for checkout as well.
The second and third image for this post includes a list of all the movies available in our collection. If you don't see a title from the list on the display don't worry. They are still available for checkout and will be rotated out and added to the display shelves throughout the summer.
The library will see you at the movies!

We dedicate this Throwback Thursday post to the unofficial campus mascot "Go Go Gorilla!" During the 1980s, he was both a mascot and hype man at all campus sports game. There was some debate at the time of whether he should become the official mascot. Of course now we have Sparty, and he is great!
