Dr. Octavia Amaechi Commissioner of Public Works

Dr. Octavia Amaechi Commissioner of Public Works Access to safe water is crucial for preventing disease, ensuring proper hydration, and supporting the overall well-being of our community.

As a physician, I have spent my career prioritizing the health of my patients, and I understand that clean, safe water is one of the most fundamental aspects of public health. I will advocate for ongoing investment in the maintenance and upgrading of our water systems to ensure that every resident has access to safe drinking water.

As we enjoy summer fruits & vegetables, the season reminds us safe food preparation is essential everywhere - including in our homes.

While South Carolina has not been identified as part of the current national Cyclospora outbreak, it’s still wise to *thoroughly* wash fresh produce under clean running water before eating, cutting, or cooking it. When appropriate, cooking produce provides a stronger layer of protection.

No single step eliminates all risk, but good food safety habits can help keep you & your family healthy.

Safe, reliable water plays an important role in protecting the health of our community every single day. Clean water isn’t just something we drink—it’s one of the simplest tools available to help protect our health. (Graphic from our neighboring state ⬇️.)

Drought Update for Our Community 💧

Although conservation is not required at this time, drought conditions are now affecting much of South Carolina.

Taking small, voluntary steps now can help protect our water system & help avoid future restrictions:
• Fix leaks & reduce unnecessary water use
• Run appliances only when full
• Be mindful with outdoor watering & times
• Take shorter showers - even a few minutes shorter counts.

Thoughtful conservation today helps ensure reliable, affordable water for everyone tomorrow.
