September is su***de prevention month. I lost my Mamma eight years ago on September 2, in what was the most traumatic experience of my life.
I've since learned that mental illness is not a weakness, and it's not "taking the easy way out". It's easy for us all to judge until we're in that very dark place of facing it head-on.
This month, let's practice compassion and active listening. Because, without these conversations, people suffer in silence, and the ripple effect of one choice is damaging to so many people- and entire communities.
Don't suffer alone.
No judgement here.
Talk about it. Listen about it.

Here's my statement, and here's the link from today's story (see below)
I don't see a need to keep defending this at this time. We're 100% volunteer, we're ready and willing to respond, and choices are being made at the County level that directly affect our residents. Spavinaw has a right to voice our concerns and report the truth to our residents.
I haven't said anything untruthful, and I was at the Association meeting in June, which is why I can report with 100% accuracy on what happened, what was said, and who said it.
I simply chose to notify Spavinaw that there are changes and that there are concerns since we weren't paged to TWO serious, life-threatening emergencies following those changes.
I'll continue to be transparent with you and I'll continue to refuse to back down from my DUTY to our neighbors and to my constituents.

Today, we had the most amazing time in Stillwater for OML's Community Leadership Development class.
The City of Stillwater, Mayor Will Joyce, and Dawn Dodson were the most gracious hosts. Thank you all for such an amazing time! It was inspiring to see how many opportunities you have created to build unity in your community!
We were able to tour Block 34 and the global KICKER headquarters.
Community leaders are working hard behind the scenes every day to create wonderful experiences for their cities and towns, and I'm grateful to be able to take ideas about their innovation home, in hopes of building something inspiring in Spavinaw.
We have a really cool surprise to reveal for our class project that will be unveiled at graduation in September. Stay tuned for that!

I spoke extensively with the Town attorney regarding the 911 protocols not paging our firefighters on all calls, including anything that dispatchers determine not to be serious enough.

LIABILITY AND OMISSION RISK. First, it was explained to me that there is a significant potential liability on Mayes County Commissioners, 911 Dispatch Center, and MESTA dispatch if they put protocols in place preventing local first responders from being notified of a situation that turns out to be something where firefighters could have taken action, but were never paged because the person taking the call didn't determine something to be a true emergency.

WHY MINUTES MATTER ON SCENE. Another example of this would be recently we had an active stroke patient, and MESTA was at least 25 minutes out. This patient's wife requested Fire be paged on this call- and we were able to have Life Flight on standby, medication list and other vital information taken, and vital signs recorded before MESTA was able to arrive.

SENDING PAGES COSTS NOTHING. Also, it should be noted that sending alert tones to page firefighters does not, by itself, create an additional cost for dispatch. It is my opinion that a separate discussion about funding can and should be had in the future to help employ more dispatchers if that would assist our community.

FIRE RESPONSE STREAMLINES PATIENT CARE. Our firefighters provide a service to this community because we want to help. Firefighters know our community and we serve because we care. Sometimes that means beginning patient care, gathering medication information, taking vital signs, or preparing for advanced resources such as Life Flight. Other times, it means supporting MESTA by helping move patients, loading the ambulance, or assisting however the crew requests. Every task we perform helps streamline patient care and allows the ambulance crew to focus on treatment.

Finally, there is no charge for firefighters to respond to any medical call, ever (not in town limits or outside of town limits). There is a Mayes County tax fund that funds our Fire Department for almost all Department needs. Unlike the Fire Department, ambulance transport may result in a bill. Unfortunately, concern about those costs sometimes causes people to delay calling 911 for help.

I have always been transparent with the citizens of Spavinaw, and today is no different.

Our Fire Department may not be able to respond as rapidly as we have in the past after you call 911. New protocols have been discussed that require 911 dispatchers to use a 13-point questionnaire to determine if your 911 call is a high enough priority to page out our firefighters. If the call isn't serious enough for them to page out the Spavinaw Fire Department, citizens will have to wait on an ambulance. There are only 5 ambulances in the County.

This happened to our residents twice yesterday, where the FD was not paged for the following two calls in our district: "Facial numbness, burning, tingling legs, and incoherent," and "88-year-old male, fall, possible fractured hip." These were 911 calls for help, and fire wasn't paged because they apparently did not qualify as "high priority calls." Neither of those calls received a Fire response until our Fire Chief called 911 to find out why we weren't paged.

With the new proposed protocol, stipulations from the Mayes County Fire Association, 911 Center, and the County Commissioners, Fire departments all across Mayes County will not be paged out the same way as before. Spavinaw Fire disagreed with the suggested protocols, and we were told we would get a special page. Within just a few weeks of being told we (Spavinaw Fire) could use special protocols, 9.1.1. Director Steve Van Horn was terminated by the Board of County Commissioners.

In the audio provided below, Director Steve Van Horn is speaking as the 911 Director earlier this month. It is my opinion that Mr. Van Horn was fighting for all of our residents- even those who call for stubbed toes and headaches.

You will also hear a Fire Chief from Chimney Rock speaking on behalf of the Mayes County fire chiefs stating, "Most were in agreement.".

‼️‼️‼️ To be clear: this post is not meant to disparage other departments or how they operate. Other departments are worried about volunteer burnout, and that is a completely valid concern for their communities.

I am sharing the audio so the residents of Spavinaw understand the facts directly, without any "he-said, she-said." Spavinaw Fire remains willing and able to respond to calls within our district, and we will always stand side-by-side with our neighbors whenever they need an extra hand.
