Although the 2026 Oratorical competitions have concluded, we are proud to recognize Ian Cho of Spearfish, winner of the 2026 District 1 contest and third-place finisher at the South Dakota state finals.

Ian was recently presented a new $1,000 scholarship from Piedmont SD Post 311 in recognition of his District 1 achievement.

The American Legion also offers youth opportunities through Boys State, Girls State, Youth Trooper Academy and Junior Shooting Sports.

Congratulations, Ian, and thank you to Post 311 for establishing this annual scholarship

Open to the public. Flag Day Ceremony — Monday, June 15, 4:30 p.m. VFW Post 5860, 3102 E. Fairgrounds Loop, Spearfish. The Spearfish Veterans Honor Guard and Scouts will host a Flag Day and flag retirement ceremony honoring the 249th anniversary of the American flag and America’s 250th birthday year. Free hot dogs, chips, and drinks will be provided.

Congratulations to Hunter Werner of Spearfish High School!

Post 164 couldn’t be prouder! Hunter was elected Secretary of State at the 2026 South Dakota Boys State program — a tremendous honor and a well-deserved achievement!

Boys State continues to be one of the finest programs in America, shaping the next generation of leaders one great young man at a time. From Spearfish to the halls of government, these young men are the future of our great nation!

This is what citizenship looks like at its finest!

Thank you to the Spearfish Veterans Honor Guard and the Black Hills Chapter of the American Legion Riders for providing Flag etiquette training to 165 first-grade students at West Elementary School.

Each year, we see the impact of this effort during our community parades when these students proudly stand and place their hands over their hearts as the American Flag passes by. It is a meaningful reminder that respect for our Flag and our nation continues with the next generation.
