When the tones drop for a call it can be anything from a structure fire, to a car accident, to a search and rescue, to a gas leak, to a cat in a tree (yes, it does happen). We are what's considered an all hazards department, that means when nobody else is sure what to do we get the call. The vast majority of the individuals responding to these calls are volunteers, people who's full time jobs include Car sales, Welder/Fabricator, Wildland Firefighter, Engineers, HVAC, Small Business Owner, 911 Dispatchers, and College Students, to name a few. These dedicated volunteers are the backbone of this department.

If you, a friend, or a family member have ever thought about getting into the fire service we would love to hear from you and answer any questions you may have.

Last nights training was a great opportunity to get some reps in on some skills we don't get to practice all that often. Vertical ventilation is a tool we can use to improve visibility and reduce heat inside a structure by giving the smoke and heat an escape path in the direction it naturally wants to go. While crews were training on the roof additional crews were inside working on forcible entry and firefighter survival skills like forcing doors, and breaching walls.

A huge thank you to Ethan and Cornerstone Auto Repair for giving us this opportunity to hone our skills. We also want to thank Hanna's Twist Bakery for letting us use their lot to stage our equipment during the training.

On 8-19-26 the Spearfish Fire Department was paged out for a report of smoke on the east side of Spearfish Canyon. Fire units responded to the area and confirmed the location of the fire was inaccessible from the Spearfish Canyon area and rerouted to Christensen Drive to gain access from the east. The fire was contained to 3/10ths of an acre by crews from The US Forest Service, South Dakota State Wildland, and Spearfish Fire Department. The cause was determined to be a lightening strike from the storm the previous night.

We have thoroughly enjoy our short reprieve from the high temperature the last few days, but the higher temps and lower humidity are making their return and fuels are still dry. This means the burn bans are going to remain in place for the foreseeable future and we ask that everyone remain vigilant in their day to day activities.

Last month we introduced you to our newest firetruck, this month we're going the other direction.
This is Engine 9, a 1936 Luverne firetruck built on a GMC chassis. The legend as it's been told is that this was the first new firetruck ever bought by the Spearfish Fire Department. It was driven from the manufacturer in Luverne Minnesota to Spearfish in February by firefighters using buffalo hide blankets to keep warm. It is currently owned and maintained by the Spearfish Volunteer Firefighters Association and the Spearfish Volunteer Firefighters Foundation, housed by the Spearfish Fire Department, and is used for parades and special events throughout the year.
Now some specifications.
239 cubic inch inline 6 GMC engine
4 speed unsynchronized transmission
500 GPM pump
250 gallon water tank
The hose and equipment it carried varied throughout it's years of service.
This is an amazing piece of history and we are proud to keep it's legacy alive.

It's always fun to be able to help out with groups doing things for a great cause. This morning we were able to help kick off the BHSU Jacket Ride, which is an annual charity ride supporting scholarships for student veterans, by raising the flag for their send off from the Joy Center.

A friendly reminder on ordinances within Spearfish city limits. There are a few things you need to keep in mind before lighting your relaxing backyard campfire ring. As you can see on the maps, the next couple of days we are in high grassland fire danger which means no campfires. Make sure to check the current grassland fire danger by goin to https://www.weather.gov/unr/rfd these can change throughout the day so what it shows in the morning may not be accurate in the evening.
Your campfire ring is for campfires, not disposal of yard waste or household garbage. Think of it this way would you eat something that was cooked over this fire? If you hesitate before you answer odds are you shouldn't be burning it.
Most of all we are asking people to be responsible, think before you act. We've already talked about the burn bans outside of city limits, that should tell you were already at high risk, in addition it's the rally, resources can be spread thin and with the increased traffic it can cause delays in response to incidents.
We love the Black Hills and the last thing we want is to see it burning. Stay safe and as always we love the support we receive from our amazing community.
