Last night the fire department held its annual dinner. We would like to congratulate the members who received special recognition for achievements above and beyond in the past year and for their years of service within the fire service.

Extra applause for our:

Special Rookie of the Year - Saber Blaze Loya

In our group photo, recognition was shown for their years of service - and even though we need help with a calculator the rough number of combined years is well over 200!

Members with 30 or more: 2
Members with 25 or more: 2
Members with 15 or more: 2

Several members will achieve 5 next year and we will keep on climbing!

We would like to thank our community for the support that we receive as we keep striving to improve and enhance our training, equipment and service to the community.

Busy weekend. Crews are out on 207 near the cotton gin finishing up a small field fire. We believe it was caused due to an electrical issue and the power company has been notified.

We will say, the farmers here with their high tech sprinklers who all got text messages about the power out is pretty cool! No ETA on when power will be back on at this time.

Also playing catch up today - over the last few days had several incidents we were late to the party on getting out:

Called to a motor vehicle accident within the city limits, canceled by law enforcement

Carbon monoxide detector activation within the city limited. House was metered and no readings were found, and secured a new detector for the occupant.

Small bar ditch fire on the south end of the county. Again, broken record time: secure your trailer chains! Please and thank you!

If you have been driving around town, you may have noticed something a little different. Last week your fire department got a facelift after almost 40 years. The panhandle winds and blowing dust tends to be a bit hard on us!

If you are a sign company or know of a good one, the department is looking for two backlit signs for our building. One of our logo and one with our name.

We want to continue to stand out in our community and make a lasting visual impression. If you can help, please drop us a message or email us directly via our contact information on our page.

Below is the before and after:

Another checkmark on the to-do list!

Last month we received the last of our new SCBA’s. A three year replacement project brings our members equipment with easy replaceable masks and air supply along with being within current national standards.

In addition all of the units have integrated safety “man down” devices that sends out an audible and visual alerts should a firefighter become incapacitated or needs emergency help.

A few odds and ends will need to be acquired but due to the face mask design, it is the desire to equip each firefighter with their own mask that they are tested and sized for. This allows for better care and better hygiene for each member.

Lighter air bottles, parachute harness and advanced ergonomics for the firefighters help reduce fatigue, increase comfort and increases the dexterity of our firefighters to perform safely.

This combined with the new SCBA compressor enhances our capabilities and safety and within budget.

Let’s also give a hand to our model this afternoon strutting the new stuff!

Today three of our members attended a great class in Dalhart given by Chief Rick Lasky - a well respected fire service leader. Spearman Fire fully supports any and all members to enrich their training and knowledge.

Represented are three of our members who range from experienced - journeyman - and less than a year in the fire service. These same members spent many hours over the past couple of days responding to fires, repairing and maintaining equipment and other tasks with very little sleep and still spent the last nine hours furthering their fire service knowledge.

Outstanding commitment!

Well we almost made it home. Just after getting back to town at midnight and got the trucks in service - we were sent out to help Stinnett Fire with a 150 acre fire in rugged county in Hutchinson County. It’s now 4am.

If you employ one of our volunteers, a tall strong cup of coffee may be in order this morning for them!

Until then, zzzzzz!

Double post tonight!

Well a deal is a deal. Last year the chief challenged member Manny that if he can quit and remain smoke/v**e free for a year he and his wife would be treated to a dinner on the chiefs dime.

Well tonight they got their dinner Brickstreet!

So maybe was a little more than a year…but for a good reason.

Tonight we also get to announce that Manny and his wife who is also a member just had their daughter Saber Blaze Loya! Our newest rookie to the department who was born on March 20!

Thank you Jacque for keeping a baseball bat nearby keeping Manny smoke and v**e free for a year and congratulations on your daughter!

Last night your volunteers were able to try something new at training - a forcible entry training simulator!

Our friends from the Adobe Walls Gin lead by our member Aaron donated time and materials to build this training prop for us.

It allows our members to utilize various hand tools and techniques on how to gain access to some of the more difficult doors we may need to breach in an emergency. As the night went on, members figured out ways to make it more difficult. We all left fairly soaked in sweat and I’m sure many of us are feeling sore this morning using some muscles didn’t know existed.

Thank you again Aaron and the crew at Adobe Walls Gin crew for building this for us!

The Spearman Fire Department would like to announce that we have received our new SCBA compressor! After a lengthy wait it finally arrived!

Ordered approximately two years ago using American Rescue Plan Act funds, this compressor will replace one that is at least 30 years old.

The replacement system allows us to fill two air bottles at the same time, allows filling of vehicle mounted bottles down the road as well as future proofing the department for high pressure bottles.

Most importantly it features an explosion containment chamber that will contain any failures of a bottle behind steel to prevent personal injuries and property damage.

Our current air bottles are pressurized at 2216psi, so that’s a lot of force should a bottle fail, which our older system did not have a containment system for.

In addition the unit is in a common frame assembly that reduces hoses and the footprint in the station.

The system also has been located to another part of the fire station that sees less dust to help prolong the life of the unit.

When the old system is fully taken out of service it will free up our limited space for a larger work bench to help perform in house repairs and maintenance of equipment and some additional storage space.

We would like to thank Panhandle Breathing Systems for keeping on top of this purchase and Spearman Public Works for the forklift to get it off the delivery truck.

More exciting news is coming over the course of the next few weeks, watch for updates!
