Control Your Child’s Access to Fire

Keep all matches and lighters out of the reach of children

Even a 2-year old can operate a cigarette lighter

Never allow anyone to use lighters or matches in an unsafe manner in your home

Never leave stoves or lighted candles unattended

Teach children to bring to your attention any matches or lighters

Don’t prematurely assign responsibilities involving matches, lighters, and fire to children

Lighting candles, filling a woodstove, burning rubbish

Participate in training to learn about youth firesetters

Help raise awareness in your community about youth firesetters

Know the resources in your community to help youth firesetters -- or help develop a juvenile firesetters program

🚒 Myth: “Volunteers aren’t as well trained as career firefighters”

Reality:

Volunteer firefighters are typically held to the same state certification standards as career personnel. Many complete training through programs aligned with National Fire Protection Association standards (like Firefighter I & II). Ongoing drills and continuing education are also common.

Volunteers also complete classes for confined space rescue, swiftwater rescue, public service diving, auto extrication, wildland firefighting, and so much more!
