Piney Fire Department was established in 1988 to provide fire service to the Piney Community and Van Buren County. Since 1988 the department has expanded its capabilities to provide medical first response and rescue services.

Early Tuesday morning at 4:39 am Piney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched with Spencer Fire Rescue to a report of a motor vehicle collision with one person still inside the vehicle. Van Buren County Sheriff's Department deputies arrived and was unable to locate anyone in or around the vehicle. Deputies , Van Buren County EMS, and firefighters searched diligently but was unable to locate the driver or any passengers.

The scene was turned over to law enforcement.

Piney Volunteer Fire Department and Spencer Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on SR 111 near Tippitt Rd. Piney’s tanker arrived on scene to find a small pickup truck 50% involved. Firefighters used the deck gun to knock the fire down while waiting for more firefighters to arrive. Then firefighters used a hand line to extinguish the fire.

The truck was being towed behind a RV when the owners noticed smoke. The owners were able to unhook the vehicle from the RV before the fire could damage the RV. One civilian was injured and transported by Van Buren County EMS.

Van Buren County Sheriff's Department also responded and helped at the scene.

On Friday evening around 4:30 PM Piney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched with Spencer Fire Department to a vehicle fire on River Cliff Way. White County Firefighters Association South Group was requested for mutual aid. Van Buren County High Schools Junior Senior Prom was about to occur River Cliff Venue. White County Fire Departments, Spencer Fire Department, and Piney Fire Department worked together to extinguish the care. It was a total loss. No one was injured.

Van Buren County Sheriff's Department deputies responded and assisted with traffic and helping firefighters.

Thursday afternoon a little after 2:00 PM Piney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched with other departments to a report of a vehicle fire in the ambulance service on Generations Dr. Reports soon advised the vehicle was beside the ambulance service. Piney Fire Department responded with an engine and a tanker. Ambulance Service personnel towed the vehicle away from the building prior to firefighters arriving on scene. Van Buren County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to the scene and assisted firefighters.

Firefighters arrived and used foam to extinguish the fire. The vehicle was a total loss.

On Tuesday afternoon a little after 2:30 pm Piney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a brush fire that was spreading toward a house on Old State Hwy 111. Piney firefighters responded with an engine and a brush truck. Firefighters arrived to find approximately a half acre of area burning. A property owner was working to burn an area when the fire escaped containment and spread to a nearby yard toward a house. Firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the fire.

Please use caution when burning outdoors.

Just before 6:00 PM on Sunday evening, Piney Volunteer Fire Department firefighters Daniel Wilson and Maynard Irwin were traveling down Lemont/Yates Mtn Rd when they saw sparks and fire on a porch. They called 911. Piney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched along with Spencer Fire Rescue, Fall Creek Falls Fire Dept, Cedar Grove Fire Department, Rocky River Fire Department, Van Buren County EMS, and Van Buren County Sheriff's Department deputies.

Van Buren County EMS personnel Jeff Hill, Ethan Deweese, and Colton Simmons arrived and used the fire extinguishers they carried. Chief Deputy Cameron Clendenon and Deputy Kade Dial arrived and used their fire extinguishers. Wilson and Irwin helped with using the fire extinguishers. Then, EMS personnel, firefighters, and deputies started carrying water from a sink in available bowls, cups, and mop buckets to extinguish the fire until a fire truck could arrive. Soon, the Spencer Fire Department arrived with an engine and cooled the hot spots.

The porch was damaged, but the house was saved. Great teamwork by our Van Buren County emergency services to save a house!

On Friday at 9:30 am, Piney Volunteer Fire Department and Spencer Fire Department was dispatched to a brush fire that had escaped containment on Walling Rd. Firefighters arrived to find a brush fire spreading into the woods. Firefighters worked to contain the fire and requested Forestry. After Forestry workers arrived, they put a line around the fire. The fire was contained inside the Forestry dozer line.
