Visit the Sundholm Cabin at the Clay County Fair!

Stop by the Sundholm Environmental Center (Log Cabin) on the fairgrounds during your visit! There’s always something new to discover, and this year you can check out our new display inside the cabin and see what’s happening at the naturalist gazebo.

Your very own Clay County Naturalist, Trinity, will be at the gazebo with a special pollinator program on:

September 12 | 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
September 19 | 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Trinity will also be around the fair throughout the week, so stop by, say hi, and see what fun nature activities are happening!

Come explore the cabin, learn something new, and visit your Clay County Naturalist while you're at the fair!

What a great evening for a bike ride!

We had such a wonderful turnout for our Family Bike Ride last Friday, and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. It was so much fun seeing families and community members come out to enjoy the trail, get some fresh air, and spend time together outdoors. After the ride, everyone headed back to Oneota Park to enjoy some well-earned s’mores around the fire.

A big thank you to Bikes, Boards & Shades and the Spencer Bike Club for joining us and helping make the evening possible. We loved getting everyone together for a fun ride through the community!

Looking for a fun way to spend a summer evening with your family? Join Clay County Conservation for a Family Bike Ride on Friday, August 28, at 6:00 p.m. at Oneota Park!

We'll enjoy a relaxed group ride along the bike trail that's perfect for riders of all ages and abilities. Whether you're riding with young children, grandparents, or anywhere in between, everyone is welcome to come along.

After the ride, we'll return to Oneota Park to gather around the fire for s'mores. It's the perfect way to celebrate the end of summer, spend time outdoors, and enjoy our local trails together.

We're excited to be partnering with Bikes, Boards & Shades and the Sheldon Bike Club to bring this community ride together!

What to bring:

Today is Hunter Education Field Day!

Interested in hunting or looking to complete your Iowa Hunter Education certification? Join us for the upcoming Hunter Education Field Day at the Oneota Environmental Learning Center.

Date: Tuesday, August 11

Location: Oneota Environmental Learning Center

Hunter Education is a mandatory program designed to introduce participants to the knowledge, skills, and responsibilities needed for safe and ethical hunting. In Iowa, anyone born after January 1, 1972 must successfully complete Hunter Education before they are eligible to purchase an Iowa hunting license.

Important: Before attending the field day, you must complete the online Hunter Education course. Once you've finished the online portion, print your Field Day Voucher and bring it with you to class.

Our Little Explorers were back at the Oneota Environmental Learning Center, and this month's theme was all about bugs, bubbles, and mud!

Our Tiny Trekkers (ages 1-3) spent the morning chasing bubbles, exploring insects, and discovering how even the smallest creatures play an important role in nature. The kiddos also had the chance to meet one of our Nature Center critters, a cockroach!

Our Little Naturalists (ages 3-6) weren't afraid to get a little messy! They dug, mixed, poured, and created mud pies while searching for worms and insects hiding in the soil.

There were lots of muddy hands, bubbly fun, curious questions, and smiling faces, all while learning through outdoor play and exploration.

Thank you to everyone who joined us! We love seeing young explorers connect with nature through hands-on experiences, and we can't wait to see everyone again next month for another adventure.

We have our second Glass Medallion Hunt winner!

Congratulations to another lucky explorer who discovered one of our hidden glass medallions along the trails at Oneota! It has been so much fun watching families get outside, explore, and experience the excitement of finding these special treasures.

But the hunt isn't over yet! There are still TWO glass medallions hidden somewhere along the Oneota trail system just waiting to be found.

Grab your walking shoes, bring the family, and head out to explore this weekend.

We have our first Glass Tile Scavenger Hunt winners!

These young explorers headed out on a hike through Oneota Park and found the very first hidden glass tile! It was so much fun seeing how excited they were when they stopped by the Oneota Environmental Learning Center to claim some awesome prizes.

One of my favorite parts of this scavenger hunt is that it encourages families to slow down, get outside, and really explore the park. You never know what you'll find along the trails, whether it's a hidden glass tile, a butterfly, a frog, a wildflower, or another exciting discovery waiting in nature.

There are still more tiles hidden around Oneota Park, so grab your family, lace up your hiking shoes, and head out on an adventure. Good luck, and happy hunting!
