🖼️ Back on the Wall… and Ready to Tell Its Story Again.

One of the first restoration projects completed by our Museum Restoration Associate, Kyler, was giving this beautiful Gilbert Gaul print, The Picket, a new life.

For several years, this piece remained off display after its frame and glass were damaged. Kyler carefully cut a new piece of glass, reframed the print, and helped return it to its rightful place in the upstairs courtroom, where visitors can once again enjoy it.

Gilbert Gaul (1855–1919) was one of America’s most respected painters of military life and historical scenes. Although born in New Jersey, he spent time in Van Buren County painting Civil War-inspired works, and many of his paintings were inspired by the landscapes that are now part of Fall Creek Falls State Park. Today, reproductions of several of his works are displayed throughout our museum as a reminder that Van Buren County has inspired artists whose work gained national recognition.

Projects like this may seem small, but they’re an important part of preserving the experience of visiting the museum. Every artifact restored, every exhibit improved, and every story shared helps ensure that our county’s history remains accessible for future generations.

A big thank you to Kyler for the care and craftsmanship he’s already bringing to the museum. We’re proud to have him as part of our team.

Come by sometime and see The Picket for yourself—you’ll find it hanging once again in the upstairs courtroom.

🇺🇸 2026 Field of Honor 🇺🇸

Hey y’all!

As Freedom Fest begins today, I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you.

The Field of Honor has been a true community effort from start to finish. Thank you to everyone who sponsored a flag, submitted the name of a loved one, shared our posts, and helped make this project possible. Because of your support, we were able to honor hundreds of veterans from our community through both the Field of Honor and the seven commemorative pages that will become a lasting part of our museum’s history.

I also want to give a very special thank you to my mom, Debbie Christian, for spending hours helping me place every one of these flags. I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive mom, and I’m truly grateful for everything she did to help make this project possible.

Finally, thank you to everyone working behind the scenes to make Freedom Fest a success. From our Tourism Committee and county leaders to the volunteers, boards, committees, and community members giving their time, this event is only possible because so many people care about Van Buren County.

Seeing everyone come together like this reminds me why I got involved in this work in the first place.

If you’re out enjoying Freedom Fest today, we hope you’ll stop by the Van Buren County Historical & Heritage Museum beginning at 4:00 PM, visit the Field of Honor, and spend a few moments remembering the men and women whose service made our freedom possible.

We look forward to seeing y’all!

🇺🇸 FREEDOM FEST IS HERE! 🇺🇸

Field of Honor 2026 – Page 7 (Final Honorees)

Today we are honored to share the seventh and final page of this year’s Field of Honor honorees.

What began as a simple idea has grown into hundreds of flags displayed around the Veterans Memorial on the courthouse lawn, each one serving as a tribute to a veteran and a reminder that their service will not be forgotten.

To every individual, family, organization, and business that sponsored a flag, submitted a loved one’s name, shared our posts, or simply encouraged this project along the way—thank you. Your support made this year’s Field of Honor far greater than we ever imagined, and we are sincerely grateful to everyone who helped make it possible.

The Van Buren County Historical & Heritage Museum will be open today beginning at 4:00 PM as Freedom Fest gets underway. While you’re enjoying the festivities, we invite you to stop by, visit the Field of Honor, take a photo with the display, explore the museum, browse our veterans’ archives, and spend a little time with us. We’d love to welcome you.

Most importantly, today is about the men and women whose names have filled these seven pages. We hope you’ll take a moment to walk among the flags, reflect on their service, and honor the sacrifices they—and their families—made for our country.

From all of us at the Van Buren County Historical & Heritage Museum, thank you, and we look forward to seeing you today.

🇺🇸 ONE DAY TO GO! 🇺🇸

Field of Honor 2026 – Page 6

Tomorrow is the day!

Hundreds of American flags now stand on the courthouse lawn, surrounding the Veterans Memorial, in honor of the brave men and women whose names have been submitted by families, friends, and our community. We hope you’ll take a few moments during Freedom Fest to walk through the Field of Honor, reflect on the sacrifices represented there, and help us honor those who served.

The Van Buren County Historical & Heritage Museum will open at 4:00 PM to kick off the afternoon’s festivities. While you’re waiting for the concert or fireworks, we invite you to stop in, cool off, and spend some time with us. Take photos by the Field of Honor, tour the museum, browse our collection of local military history and veterans books, explore our exhibits, or simply come in and sit a spell. Our entire museum board will be there, and we’d love to visit with you.

We’ll also be sharing Page 7, the final page of this year’s Field of Honor honorees, tomorrow. Looking back over this project, we’re humbled by the incredible response from our community. What began as a simple idea has grown into something much larger than we imagined, and that’s because of all of you. To every individual, family, business, and organization that chose to honor a veteran this year—thank you. Your support, your stories, and your willingness to preserve the memory of those who served have made this year’s Field of Honor truly special. We appreciate each and every one of you.

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

🇺🇸 2 Days Until Freedom Fest! 🇺🇸

Our Field of Honor continues to take shape as we prepare for this Friday’s Freedom Fest 250 celebration.

Today’s page recognizes another group of veterans and families whose service and sacrifice have helped shape our community. Thank you to every sponsor who has chosen to honor someone special through this project.

A special thank you goes to Tammy Seamons, who sponsored 15 flags. Tammy also asked that we recognize the family members who joined her in supporting this tribute: Raylon, Rynn, Remy Melton, Wayne Seamons, Cierston Melton, Eli, Emily Cotter, and the Maples family. We are grateful for your support in helping make this year’s Field of Honor possible.

Join us this Friday, July 3, as hundreds of American flags surround the historic courthouse, home of the Van Buren County Historical & Heritage Museum, before the celebration continues throughout Spencer—from the historic courthouse and museum to the Van Buren County Fairgrounds.

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored a flag, shared our posts, or helped spread the word. We look forward to seeing our community come together to honor those who served and celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.
