Happy Pollinator Week! To provide habitat and food for Monarch Butterflies during their complex migration and life cycle, we have installed a small Monarch Waystation at the MYPath trailhead. The planting includes: Yellow Coneflower, New England Aster, Little Bluestem, Butterfly W**d, Whorled Milkweed, Tall Ironweed, Blackeyed Susan, Wild Bergamot, Spotted Beebalm, and Purple Coneflower. Tree giveaway tomorrow 10-2 at Cooper Commons Park in Spencer! Norway Spruce and Bald Cypress. Limit of 2 trees per household. Interested participants are asked to remain in their vehicle and volunteers will take your order and package trees for you. Also, participants are asked to wear gloves and masks for the safety of our volunteers.

The Owen County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Spencer Parks Committee are giving away tree seedlings to celebrate the mission of Arbor Day this Saturday, May 9. Stop by the MYPath Shelter at Cooper Commons Park in Spencer from 10am-2pm to pick up. Trees will be given away on a first-come-first served basis with no advanced reservations and limit of two trees per household. As a safety precaution, participants are asked to remain in their vehicles with protective masks while the volunteers package their trees. Tree Species available include Bald Cypress and Norway Spruce from the Vallonia State Nursery. Planting instructions will be provided. Plant a tree for yourself and for future generations! Our next course in the Forest Stewardship Series is Tree Identification 101 on Tuesday, March 10 at the SWCD's Hancock School Road Property. Learn to ID trees by bud, bark, and other physical characteristics. From 231 South of Spencer turn right (North) on Hancock School road for less than a mile. Property is the gate on the Left with the "Demonstration Forest" sign. Free event, no registration required. See ya there! Also, save the date for Tree Planting Basics on Wednesday, April 8, 5:00-6:00 PM at the SWCD office in Spencer.

All attendees to the SWCD Annual Meeting on Thursday, February 20 will receive a free seed packet from Cardno Native Plant Nursery! It's not too late to RSVP for the event, which will be held at the 4H Building in Spencer from 6:00-8:00pm on the 20th. There will be warm and tasty soups, delicious desserts, a keynote speaker on Managing Healthy Forests, Board Elections, and free seed packets :) Who needs anything else on a wintery evening!? Hope you can join us.
