On behalf of the Spencer Police Department, we extend our thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and colleagues of the Massachusetts State Police Trooper who was tragically killed last night by a wrong way driver. This is an incredibly difficult time for the law enforcement community and all those affected. Incidents like this are a reminder of the risks officers face every day in service to others. We ask that you keep this trooper’s loved ones in your thoughts during this heartbreaking time.

Today, Spencer Police, along with Spencer Fire, Spencer Rescue Squad, Morin’s Funeral Home and Audette’s Towing conducted a mock fatal OUI crash demonstration at David Prouty High School. This presentation showed students the very real and devastating consequences of impaired and distracted driving.

With prom season approaching, it’s important to understand the risks. National data shows that about one third of alcohol related teen traffic deaths occur during prom season, April-June, with nearly 1,000 young lives lost each year.

We urge all students to make smart, safe choices:

• Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
• Always wear your seatbelt
• Avoid distractions behind the wheel
• Have a plan for a safe ride home

One bad decision can change lives forever. Make the right choice keep yourself and others safe.
