Everyone, meet our new Spencer Police SRO, Officer Murphy!

With school about to be back in session tomorrow , SRO Murphy would like to remind the community that keeping our students safe takes all of us. Here are a few reminders to help us reach that goal:

* Stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights.
* Slow down and stay alert in school zones, at crosswalks, and near bus stops.
* Put the phone down and avoid distracted driving.
* Be especially watchful for children walking or riding bicycles to and from school.
* Expect increased traffic during arrival and dismissal, and give yourself a few extra minutes—especially during the first few weeks of school!
* Follow the directions of crossing guards and officers assisting with school traffic.

Please slow down, stay alert, and help us keep Spencer’s students safe.

From all of us at the Spencer Police Department, we wish our students, families, teachers, and school staff a safe and successful 2026–2027 school year!

Spencer Police Union Golf Tournament Update

Due to an especially busy year for the Spencer Police Union, we have made the difficult decision to take a one year pause from hosting our annual golf tournament. With several retirements, events, and other commitments throughout the year, we felt it was best to take a short break while continuing our other fundraising efforts.

The good news is we fully plan on bringing the tournament back next year!

A sincere thank you to all of our past sponsors, donors, golfers, and local businesses for your continued support. Your generosity helps the Spencer Police Union continue to support and give back to our community.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to a Spencer Police Officer.

And until next year remember to replace your divots!⛳️⛳️

PSA: Running Out of Summer 5K – Saturday, August 29 starting at 10 AM!

Our friends at Rapscallion Brewery & Taproom are hosting the Running Out of Summer 5K this Saturday along the Spencer Rail Trail! The race directly supports local charitable initiatives through the Rapscallion HOPS Foundation, which helps individuals and families in need right here in Spencer and the surrounding communities.

With the increased activity on the Rail Trail that morning, residents may want to consider giving their four-legged friends a different walking route for a few hours. We know the trail is a favorite spot for many pups, and we appreciate everyone helping give the runners a little extra room for the day!

Good luck to all the runners, and thank you to Rapscallion and HOPS for continuing to support our community!

For any further info please see Rapscallion Runs!

The Spencer Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a male suspect believed to be involved in multiple motor vehicle break-ins.

These incidents occurred during the early morning hours of August 2, 2026. Surveillance footage from a residence captured the suspect in the area of Cherry Street at approximately 3:34 a.m.

During these incidents, the suspect entered unlocked motor vehicles and stole various items.

Still photographs of the suspect captured from surveillance footage are attached below.

If you recognize this individual or have any information that may assist with this investigation, please contact the Spencer Police Department at 508-885-6333.

We also remind residents to lock their vehicles, remove valuables when possible, and report any suspicious activity. Please do not make yourself an easy target as surrounding communities have experienced similar activity.

Today, the Spencer Police Department is proud to announce the promotions of Lieutenant Patrick Waugh and Sergeant Todd LaPorte.

With the recent retirement of Lieutenant Hodgerney, we knew we had some very big shoes to fill. After careful consideration, it became clear that Sgt. Patrick Waugh was the right person for the job.

Lieutenant Waugh has long been a cornerstone of this department since 2017. He is widely respected not only within Spencer but throughout the Commonwealth for his professionalism, leadership, and dedication to law enforcement. As an instructor in fi****ms, Active Shooter, APP, and other specialized areas, he has helped train and mentor countless officers across Massachusetts. His knowledge, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to the profession make him an outstanding choice to lead our department into the future.

We are also excited to announce the promotion of Sergeant Todd LaPorte who has been a leader in this department since 2002.

Known to many of us as “The Professor,” Sgt. LaPorte has earned the respect of both his fellow officers and the community through his professionalism, patience, and ability to teach and mentor others. Most recently serving as our School Resource Officer in the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District, he built lasting relationships with students, faculty, and families while making a positive impact on countless young lives. As he transitions into his new role, Sgt. LaPorte will continue leading our overnight shift, mentoring our newer officers, and helping shape the next generation of Spencer Police officers with the same dedication and leadership that have become his trademark.

Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Patrick Waugh and Sergeant Todd LaPorte on these well deserved promotions. We are proud to have these two exceptional leaders serving the Town of Spencer and look forward to all they will continue to accomplish.

Congratulations, Lt. Waugh and Sgt. LaPorte!
