Today is Native Fish Day, officially proclaimed by Minnesota in honor of the 26 species of native rough fish that help our waters thrive. This proclamation shines a spotlight on historically undervalued species, such as suckers, buffalo, gar, bowfin, and freshwater drum, to raise awareness about declining freshwater fish populations and the importance of healthy, resilient lake ecosystems.

These native fish support biodiversity, strengthen food webs, and help maintain balance in Minnesota’s lakes and rivers. Today is a celebration of their ecological value, cultural significance, and growing recreational interest across the state! Learn more about their protections and importance through the MN DNR.

Fishing opener is almost here! As you hit the water, help protect Minnesota’s lakes by following DNR regulations, using legal bait and gear, and practicing careful catch and release. Always clean, drain, dry, and properly dispose of bait, fishing line, and trash to prevent the spread of invasive species. Fishing responsibly today ensures healthy lakes and strong fish populations for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered last night to help clean up around the Calhoun Dam, boat access, and bridge! Because of your hard work, we collected nearly a dozen bags of trash altogether. Some of the more surprising “treasures” included three large rolls of carpet, a fishing rod, a cassette tape, a coin purse, and several pounds of additional trash.

Please help protect our outdoor spaces and wildlife by disposing of waste properly. Trash left behind is harmful to people, the environment, fish, and wildlife. It impacts everyone who enjoys these areas. Let’s all do our part to keep Calhoun clean and beautiful by cleaning up after ourselves.

PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” are man‑made substances that don’t easily break down and can accumulate in our bodies and the environment. They’re commonly found in everyday items like non‑stick cookware, waterproof clothing, cosmetics, and some pesticides. Long‑term exposure has been linked to serious health concerns, including cancer, fertility issues, and thyroid disorders. Because they’re so widespread, most of us have been exposed without realizing it.

The good news? Small, informed choices can make a big difference. Choosing organic foods, eating more high‑fiber plants, checking cosmetics for fluorinated ingredients, swapping non‑stick pans for safer alternatives, and storing food in glass or metal can all help reduce your PFAS load. Informed choices add up. Small changes can significantly reduce your PFAS exposure.
