Rutherford County Cooperative Extension About NC Cooperative Extension
Welcome to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, the largest outreach program at North Carolina State University.

Based in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, we reach millions of North Carolina citizens each year through local centers in the state’s 100 counties and with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Cooperative Extension is a partnership that began here in 1914 when county, state and federal governments agreed that by joining together they could provide all citizens with access to the weal

th of knowledge generated by public universities. Today that partnership includes county governments working to solve local problems, a national network of land-grant universities including NC State and NC A&T State University, and the US Department of Agriculture working together, we recognize that we achieve much more than we can alone. Nationally, Cooperative Extension provides educational programming in five key areas:

sustaining agriculture and forestry
protecting the environment
maintaining viable communities
developing responsible youth
developing strong, healthy and safe families
In our county centers across the state, county agents are the bridge between the state’s people and Extension specialists working at the state’s land-grant universities. Agents educate the public through meetings and workshops, field days, personal consultations, web- and videoconferencing. They also provide publications, newsletters, social media interaction, videos and other educational materials. We hope this Web site will provide more information on the myriad programs offered by Cooperative Extension and how we are working to serve you. Dr. Joe Zublena
Associate Dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and
Director, North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service

This Friday, March 6 at 10:00 AM, join me at the Cooperative Extension Office for a Pop-Up Pressure Canning Class!

We’ll be learning how to safely pressure can chicken in a relaxed, informal setting. This is a great opportunity to observe the process, ask questions, and gain confidence in safe food preservation.

It’s casual, practical, and hands-on to watch, perfect if you’ve been wanting to learn!

Comment below if you’d like to attend! Feel free to share this post!

I want to share a couple of great deals to help everyone buy food for the upcoming holiday season. Walmart and Aldi are both offering meal deals for $35 and $40 respectively.

These meals are designed to feed 10 people. Just add them to your cart and check out. The prices will ring up discounted. The turkey price will be by weight, so keep this in mind, if you choose a larger turkey, your total will be more. This may also be a good time to buy a meal for a family in need also!

Here are the links to view the deals:

Please share! This is a small gesture to the very large problem of food insecurity, but everyone needs something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, even if it's something as small as a meal!

I am also still taking donations for the following items here at the Cooperative Extension Office in Spindale:
-Boxed stuffing mix
-Canned whole kernel corn
-Canned french style green beans
-0.87 oz chicken or turkey gravy packets
-4 oz. plain instant mashed potatoes
-5 oz canned chicken OR 12.5 oz canned chicken
- Cranberry sauce

If you are interested in volunteering to pack the bags, please reach out to me. We will pack 100+ bags of food 11/24 starting at 10am.
