The BLET program at Isothermal Community College in Spindale, N.C., is the state-mandated course of study for anyone interested in becoming a certified law enforcement officer. Students who complete the program are trained in 35 topics including criminal law, arrest, search, and seizure, driver training, defense tactics, firearms, and other related law enforcement topics. Or perhaps you want to satisfy an urge to try out the Bel Canto, or you simply want to follow doctor’s order to learn a new language to improve your memory. In any case, this Italian class may be what you have been waiting for. Instructor Giuliana Polinari Riley, was born in Verona, Italy, and studied in Rome, prior to coming to the United States. You will learn basic expressions for a variety of situations you may encounter visiting Italy, correct pronunciation for your arias, and lots of vocabulary to exercise your memory.

Learn how to take control of your camera to obtain impressive images of your favorite subjects. Make stronger photographs by using striking composition, interesting perspective, and appropriate focal length. Whether you are interested in photographing equestrian activities, sports, people, landscapes, flowers, or animals, mastering camera settings will greatly improve the quality of your pictures. Learn how to select the proper shutter speed and aperture to obtain the desired outcome. Practice setting your camera to get better photos in low light without using a flash. This class will provide individualized hands-on instruction and practice on location. Some digital editing will also be included. Bring any camera and manual, if available. A digital photo storage device, such as a thumb drive, would also be useful.

Giuliana Polinari Riley has previously taught Photography in the Applied Science and Technology Department of Isothermal Community College for over thirty years. She is the recipient of multiple Photography awards from Kodak, Artists Abroad, Verona, Italy, Rutherford County Visual Arts Guild; and she was granted the 2014 and 2019 Regional Artist Project Grants.
