The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) has launched the Greater Des Moines Watershed Program, a targeted initiative that provides dedicated cost-share incentives to farmers and landowners located in 22 counties upstream from Central Iowa

This morning, I announced the launch of the Greater Des Moines Watershed Program — a new targeted effort to accelerate water quality practices upstream from the Des Moines metro.

Thanks to the Farm to Faucet water quality legislation passed this year, we are increasing cover crop cost-share to $25 per acre for both new and existing users in 22 counties, with up to 500 acres eligible per farmer or landowner.

Cover crops are one of the most effective tools we have to keep soil and nutrients in the field, improve soil health, and protect water quality.

Farmers continue to be part of the solution, and we’re going to keep working with them to scale up proven conservation practices across Iowa.

Farmers and landowners can learn more and sign up at a local USDA service center or visit CleanWaterIowa.org.

Kossuth County SWCD would like to get the word out about Practical Farmers of Iowa upcoming field day. In partnership with Practical Farmers of Iowa, Bob and Sara Pearson will be hosting a field day on Friday, June 26 near Wesley, IA. The field day titled "Overcoming Challenges and Finding Opportunities for Growth on an Organic Farm" will begin at 4 p.m. and end with a meal sponsored by Mad Capital at 6 p.m. Attendees will hear Sara and Bob's tips for transitioning a farm to organic and Brian Tumey of Kossuth County NRCS will assist in sharing about cost-share programs available to organic and transitioning acres. The field day will include a viewing of the Pearsons' corn, oats and soy in the field as they discuss disease management for organic crops. To round out the event, attendees will see Bob and Sara's preferred equipment for cultivation and w**d control before enjoying a shaded meal. Learn more and RSVP in advance on PFI's website.
