Congress Bravely Slays an Imaginary Dragon While Your Groceries Rot
Stop the presses and notify the historians: on Tuesday afternoon, the United States House of Representatives bravely gathered to conquer an imaginary dragon.
By an earth-shattering margin of 220 to 192 (plus two members who courageously took no stance whatsoever), our hard-working legislators passed a recorded vote that changes exactly zero lines of federal law. It will not shave a nickel off your grocery bill, trim a dime off your rent, or soothe the burning migraine that is your health insurance premium. Instead, it exists purely as a high-priced piece of legislative fanfiction condemning an economic system that does not run this country.
The masterpiece in question is H.Res. 1490, courtesy of Rep. Jeff Crank of Colorado. It bravely "condemns socialism in all its forms," shakes a fist directly at the Democratic Socialists of America, and because subtlety is dead...hijacks the moment to endorse the SAVE America Act. Naturally, it also solemnly declared that only American citizens should vote in American elections, a bold stance made all the more heroic by the fact that it has literally been federal law for decades. Why let a silly thing like existing statutes get in the way of a perfectly good stunt? Eight Democrats tripped over themselves to vote yes.

What do they have in common? A sudden ideological epiphany? Of course not. They represent swing districts that the Cook Political Report treats like live grenades. Last November, 86 Democrats were eager to play along with this routine; this year, only eight showed up, while two others (Chrissy Houlahan and Maggie Goodlander) voted "present" to ensure they stood firmly nowhere. The rest simply declined to indulge the clown show, mostly because primary voters have spent the year backing candidates who refuse to apologize for caring about universal healthcare.
The comedy got richer before the vote even hit the floor. The procedural rule almost died because five far-right Republican purists threw a tantrum over spending. The only reason the vote survived was because two Democrats (Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez) raced across the aisle to rescue the Republican majority from itself, blinding Hakeem Jeffries in the process. You truly cannot write satire this good: a measure designed to mock Democratic disunity required Democratic life support just to be born.
When Rep. Josh Gottheimer proposed stripping out the unrelated voter ID provisions to offer an actual, clean vote on socialism, leadership swiftly suffocated it in the Rules Committee. Heavens forbid anyone vote on the thing they claimed to be voting on. Meanwhile, Steve Scalise took to the mic to sound the alarm on noncitizen voting, a fantasy that is not happening, was never proven to be happening, and will not happen tomorrow. But why burden a great headline with annoying things like evidence?
The internet's review was unanimous: watching Congress throw a tantrum over an imaginary threat while six in ten Americans struggle to afford rent, groceries, and medicine under our current system is the best recruitment pitch the left could ever buy.
This entire circus exists because DSA-backed candidates keep winning primaries against tired establishment figures, and Republicans smelled a November mailer. And that is the bitter punchline. Congress did not spend its Tuesday fixing the budget, tackling inflation, or addressing the healthcare catastrophe. They spent the afternoon manufacturing glossy, cardstock mailers for eight nervous incumbents and a batch of canned talking points for everyone else.
None of this changes the law. It just produces a piece of junk mail that will land in your recycling bin next month, carefully omitting the procedural dumpster fire that spawned it. Tuesday's vote did not protect a single American from a single real-world problem. It merely confirmed that 220 politicians would rather fight ghosts on television than do their actual jobs.
