Our dedicated Spokane Valley Police officers had a great time meeting the community at last Saturday’s Cops & Kids Car Show!

Kids got to climb inside the police helicopter and specialty emergency response vehicles. The police K9s showed off their training with exciting demonstrations. Chief Ellis hosted a storytime and handed out stickers. Families got to see the police drone in action and watch the motorcycle rodeo. The SVPD’s new bomb robot dog even made an appearance!

Food trucks, lawn games and activities, and kids' face painting rounded out the event for a full afternoon of family-friendly fun.

The community got to explore nearly 300 cars at Saturday’s Cops & Kids Car Show!

Families got to reminisce with the classics, get a close-up look at the hydraulics on lowriders, peer inside the engines of sports cars, and even snap pictures with Lightning McQueen himself 🏎️

Thank you to all the drivers who came out, braved the rain showers during setup, and gave the community such a show!

Plan your visit to the annual Senior Resource Fair on Monday, September 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at CenterPlace.

Seniors and their caretakers will have the chance to learn about local resources and businesses, including healthcare providers, insurance agencies, and activity groups. Entrance is free, and the Senior Center will be giving out tote bags on a first come first serve basis!

The Resource Fair is also a great opportunity to learn more about joining the Spokane Valley Senior Center and the activities they offer, from cribbage and book club to dancing and darts.

Balfour Park’s new sports courts are officially open!

Four new pickleball courts, one full basketball court, two half basketball courts, and a new sound system, plus sports lighting that will allow the community to get outside and play even in the dark winter months, are now available for your use.

The City Council, joined by State Senator Leonard Christian, city staff, and community members, gathered on Saturday, August 29, for a celebratory ribbon-cutting on the new courts. Then the community and kids of all ages jumped in to enjoy some fierce competition and fun during the Cops & Kids Car Show!

Thank you to our Washington state representatives who advocated for the state funding that made these new park amenities possible.

This wraps up the Balfour Park construction for this year, but next spring we’ll pick right back up once the awarded state and federal grant funding becomes available to construct the new playground and splash pad! We’re excited to continue bringing these improvements to city parks and creating places for the community to gather, relax, and recreate.

With school now back in session, please be alert and drive safely in school zones. Remember that the school zone speed limit is 20 mph. Please always disconnect from distractions and come to a full stop at crosswalks for Valley kids’ safety.

When a school bus driver stops and extends the red stop sign, drivers traveling in the lane adjacent to the bus in either direction must stop. This allows children to safely load or offload the bus.

Have a great school year, Valley kids!
