Spokane Aquifer Joint Board

Spokane Aquifer Joint Board The Spokane Valley Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer is the "sole source" of drinking water for over 500,000 residents in Washington and Idaho.

Spokane Aquifer Joint Board (SAJB) members work to protect our aquifer wells and river system. As the Defender of the Aquifer, Aqua Duck helps SAJB educate the public about ways you too can protect our water.

Today, we’re celebrating 31 years of the Spokane Aquifer Joint Board.

For more than three decades, we’ve worked alongside our partners and community to protect the Spokane Valley–Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer and safeguard our region’s groundwater for future generations.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this work along the way. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished together and look forward to continuing it for years to come. 💙

We get it… one sunny day and suddenly it feels like it’s time to fire up the sprinklers.

But honestly? Your yard isn’t asking for it yet.

The soil is still holding onto moisture from winter, the temps are cool, and we’re still getting those classic spring pop-up showers. Your grass and plants are doing just fine without any extra help right now.

Turning on sprinklers this early is kind of like watering a plant that’s already sitting in a full glass of water… it’s just overkill.

If you can wait a few more weeks, you’ll save water, save money, and help make sure there’s plenty to go around when the hot, dry days actually hit.

So for now, give your sprinklers a little more vacation time. They’ve earned it. Learn more about water conservation at

We had a great time at the 2026 Tree Sale! 🌱

During the event, SAJB gave away 150 native plant plugs - thank you to everyone who stopped by to grab one and chat with us! Planting native species is a simple way we can all support a healthier landscape and help protect our aquifer, one yard at a time. 💧

Check out this quick video from the event. If you picked up a plant from us, we’d love to see it in its new home! Drop a photo in the comments 👇

We woke up to a fresh blanket of snow across the region this morning ❄️ Always a nice surprise this time of year.

Snow like this helps add water that eventually makes its way to the Spokane River and the Spokane Valley–Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer. As we head toward spring, it’s a great reminder that using water wisely helps protect the aquifer our community depends on every day. 💧
