🇺🇸 Today, as Memorial Day comes to a close, I just want to say how grateful I am for the men and women who gave their lives for our country.

Their sacrifice has blessed us all and allows us to live in a nation of freedom and opportunity. 🇺🇸

I think we can all agree that major roadway changes need to be made openly, with transparency and meaningful public input. These decisions can impact arterial congestion, neighborhood livability, business access, commute times, pedestrian and cyclist safety, emergency response, parking, and future growth in different ways. Simply requiring any staff or Transportation Commission-proposed lane reductions/road diets or one-way to two-way conversions to be included in the City’s annually updated six-year street plan before projects are too far along ensures the public has a real chance to understand the tradeoffs and meaningfully weigh in, while placing the final decision with the City Council, the elected body most directly accountable to the public.

In February, an unelected commission unilaterally voted to remove two travel lanes from Grand Boulevard, one of the city’s busiest corridors. Increasingly, the same body seems poised to do similarly to Spokane Falls Boulevard, while also converting a section into a two-way road.

Bittersweet saying farewell to Amanda Roley last week. I’ve really appreciated Amanda’s genuinely curious and thoughtful approach to journalism and our many conversations over the years, including the chance to sit down for a great KREM 2 “The Tea with Amanda Roley” segment at Revival Tea.

Amanda, Vina and I wish you and your husband the very best in your next chapter. has been lucky to have you!

I really believe we selected the exact right leader to oversee the Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD).

Danny Scalise impressed throughout the hiring process as steady, thoughtful, communicative, and, extra importantly, fiscally responsible. I’ve been especially impressed by how quickly he’s rolled up his sleeves and engaged the work. We’ve been meeting weekly or more, and I have really valued our discussions and the chance to better understand his approach for the District.

Leadership really does matter. Particularly, in positions like this that impact public trust. Danny gives me a lot of optimism for the direction ahead for public health and the !

Newly installed Spokane Regional Health District administrator Danny Scalise wants to bring stability to an agency that has had a revolving door of leaders since the COVID-19 pandemic.

I’m thankful I could attend today’s 38th Annual Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Ceremony. Honored today were Spokane County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ken Salas and Washington State Patrol Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting.

My prayers go out to their families, friends, and fellow officers. I am truly grateful for their service and sacrifice.
