Eileen, 11

Eileen was a victim of sexual abuse. Her father was deceased, and her mother and her mother’s boyfriend used methamphetamine and marijuana. Eileen was behind in school and had emotionally shut down. Once in foster care, Eileen started letting go of her past life. She was adopted by her foster family and now has an extended family that loves and cares about her. She had a traumatic history, but Eileen can start to heal now that she has found her forever home.

An Olive Crest staff member, whom we’ll call “Paula,” shared an experience she had getting Easter baskets ready for some of our youth. She was in a checkout line, and a cashier commented how she was buying a lot of candy. Paula explained that she was preparing Easter baskets for foster kids, and a young woman in line asked where she worked. When Paula replied, the woman, Jeannie, screamed, saying, “I’m an Olive Crest kid!” Now married with a baby, Jeannie was a youth formerly needing help who went on to thrive—and Olive Crest had a hand in her transformation.

Sam, 9, had been abused and neglected. After leaving that tragic life behind, he faced yet more heartbreak from a failed adoptive placement. When Sam came to Olive Crest, however, he went to live in an adoptive home where things started to change, and he was at last able to live with his two younger brothers. At first, Sam was adamantly against adoption, claiming that if adopted, he would find his mother the minute he turned 18.

After just six months, though, Sam has started to heal. At one point, he even told his case manager, “It’s impossible to destroy the love I have with this foster family.” Sam’s life has finally changed for the better now that he has a loving home and the support of Olive Crest staff.

Joseph was a baby found in unspeakable conditions—he was left in a trash bag in an alley. He was found by a man walking his dog when the dog sniffed him out. At the time, he was simply called “John Doe.” No one knew where he came from. Once with Olive Crest, Joseph was welcomed by a special foster family, though he had health issues which were then undetermined. After medical tests, it was found that Joseph needed cranial surgery. Through these tough times, his devoted Olive Crest family has stayed with him when he has been at the hospital, which can be for weeks at a time. The silver lining is that Joseph has found his forever home, as now his foster family is finalizing his adoption. Going from a trash bag in an alley to a permanent loving home, Joseph is finally receiving the life he deserves.

Each and every day at Olive Crest, lives are being transformed through the healing power of family.

A Life Transformed: Angela, age 4
Angela was severely delayed in her verbal and motor skills. She also has a fatal condition that will cause her organs to shut down if she has too much protein. She had been in and out of the hospital her whole life. After coming to Olive Crest, Angela was placed with the Sparks family. Mrs. Sparks provides a structured diet, and during Angela’s 13 months with the Sparks so far, she has never been hospitalized. Her verbal and motor skills have also improved. Angela’s doctors now feel that she could live well into adulthood. Thanks to the patience and commitment of her Olive Crest family, Angela is proof that miracles do happen.
