"Litter isnโ€™t just ugly, itโ€™s dangerous.

Every year in Washington, items escaping from unsecured loads cause around 300 traffic crashes, including many injuries and even fatalities.

Nearly 40% of roadside litter comes from falling or blowing out of unsecured vehicle loads.

Properly securing truck and trailer loads with tie-down equipment like cargo nets and ratchet straps prevents crashes and saves lives, ensuring Washington roads are both safe and litter free."
- Washington State Department of Ecology

Secure your load - keep litter from entering our regions waterways - help protect people and the environment from the dangers of unsecured loads.

Being a Water Defender can be as simple as picking up trash near a storm drain. ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿฆธ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ

Storm drains help to keep our roads and sidewalks from flooding when it rains. Unfortunately, litter can also be washed down a storm drain and end up in our region's waterways. ๐Ÿ™The Little Spokane River is especially susceptible to stormwater pollution like litter.

You can adopt a storm drain near your home and business and sweep up, rake up and pick up pollution near it!

We have named the storm drain near the Spokane County Regional Water Reclamation Facility "Water Defender Headquarters" and we regularly monitor to help make sure only rain goes down the storm drain.

Adopt-A-Drain.org is a national program allowing citizens to adopt their local storm drains, monitor for pollution and track how much waste they prevented going down the drain. Click on the link to learn more! ๐Ÿ‘‡

A beautiful day was spent at Finch Arboretum celebrating Arbor Day with people from all over Spokane! โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒฒ

Spokane County Regional Waste Ambassadors put on the Compost Fair, celebrating and educating people on all things compost and food waste management. Participants who visited each station were able to choose either a table-top compost bin or backyard Geo-Bin to help put food waste in its place! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿชฑ๐Ÿซ‘

Along with receiving a free compost bin, attendees were encouraged to BYOB and take home some free compost, curtesy of the Compost Fair's event sponsor, Barr-Tech. ๐ŸŒฑ

Help ensure only RAIN goes down a STORM DRAIN! ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

Storm drains are all over our community, helping to direct stormwater off the roads and sidewalks to prevent flooding. On wet days like today, we notice them even more.

Taking a few minutes to notice the storm drains near you and clearing them of debris - branches, litter, leaves, etc. - helps them do their job and keeps pollutants from getting into our waterways. Many of our waterways, especially the Little Spokane River, are very sensitive to stormwater pollutants.
