Today is National Brush Your Teeth Day! Brushing your teeth is important for maintaining good oral health and preventing dental issues such as cavities and gum disease.
It's especially important for younger kids to develop good brushing habits as tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood. Finding ways to encourage good brushing habits, such as playing a toothbrushing song or letting them pick their own toothbrush and toothpaste, can help set kids on a lifelong journey of good oral health!
It’s also important for younger kids to visit the dentist regularly as they transition from baby teeth to adult teeth. Through our Access to Baby and Child Dentistry program, children six years and under and those with special health care needs up to 13 years old can visit the dentist twice a year. Learn more and see if your family qualifies at srhd.org/abcd.

Developing a safe sleep plan for your baby and sharing it with everyone who might care for them is the most important thing you can do to reduce your baby’s risk of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
The safest way for a baby to sleep is:
✅ In the same room as you, but not the same bed.
✅ On a firm, flat and level surface.
✅ Without pillow toys or other soft objects.
✅ Wearing pajamas and/or a non-weighted sleep sack.
✅ On their back.
There are many ways to promote safer sleep for your little one and being aware of them is the best way to incorporate them into their sleep routine. Learn more and create a safe sleep plan for your baby at: srhd.org/safesleep
October is National Healthy Lung Month! While there are many ways to promote better lung health, one of the best ways is to avoid smoking, va**ng, or using cannabis as they contain harmful chemicals that can affect your lungs & lead to more serious health issues, like lung cancer. The spookiest night of the year is just around the corner! If you plan to trick or treat, consider these safety tips to keep your quest for candy safe:
✅ Bring a flashlight to see sidewalks, pathways, and stairs clearly.
✅ Trick-or-treat in neighborhoods with slower traffic and use sidewalks on busier streets.
✅ Put reflective tape on candy bags, strollers, or costumes to be more visible to drivers.
✅ Encourage older kids to trick or treat in groups if you don’t plan to go with them.
We all want to make friends, but you shouldn't have to compromise your health by using cannabis to fit in. Cannabis can have negative effects on your brain development and mental health. Plus, cannabis can increase feelings of social anxiety—making it harder to meet people and make new friends at school or through extracurricular activities.

Today is National Ageism Awareness Day. Ageism can be defined as how we think, feel, and act towards someone based on their age. It's also a form of prejudice that can be harmful and potentially damaging to a person's opportunities, mental health, and quality of life. Ageism can also negatively impact our economy and our community's overall well-being.
Being aware of how certain behaviors, actions, and words towards people of all ages can promote ageism can help everyone in our community start to engage in conversation about it. Learn more at: https://ow.ly/cEJU50PUgVX
The Spokane Regional Health District offices will be closed on Monday, October 9, in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day. We will resume regular business hours on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.

More than likely, we've all heard the saying, "Age is just a number." While this is a great reminder that age shouldn't limit a person's lifestyle or achievements, age isn't always viewed as just a number. Sometimes, a person's age can reinforce certain stereotypes or perceptions we have of their abilities.
With National Ageism Awareness Day coming up, we want to share more about what ageism is, what it looks like, and what we can all do to help combat it. Join SRHD to learn more at: https://ow.ly/4fnW50PTb2z
