Don't set it and forget it! Remember that sunscreen needs to be applied at least every two hours for optimal protection against the sun and more frequently if you are in and out of water. You should choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and apply it at last 20 minutes before heading outdoors. Does water near you look like this? Avoid water that contains harmful algal or cyanobacterial blooms—when in doubt, stay out!

Here are some tips:
-Look for signs or advisories from local public health authorities or beach managers. If the beach is closed or if there is guidance to avoid the water, stay out and keep pets and children out!
-Do not go into or play in water that:
Smells bad
Looks discolored
Has foam, scum, or paint-like streaks on the surface
Has dead fish or other animals washed up on its shore or beach

You may have seen messages circulating around social media lately that encourage people not to use sunscreen because of various potential health risks associated with it. However, wearing sunscreen is an important way to protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV and UVB rays. Without proper protection, excessive sun exposure can lead to more serious health issues, like skin cancer.

It’s also important to consider whether the information you hear comes from a credible source before considering advice you might see on popular apps like TikTok and Instagram. Sunscreen continues to be monitored by the Federal Drug Administration to ensure it’s safe for people to use. So far, no ingredients have been identified as harmful to a person’s health.

We encourage everyone to continue applying sunscreen before heading outdoors, as we want everyone to stay safe and healthy this summer! Learn more about sunscreen, its safety, and which types are recommended for the best protection against the sun at: https://shorturl.at/yR6rn

We all want to keep our pets safe and healthy, and during summer, it's especially important to know how to keep them safe in hot weather. Consider these tips to help your furry friends :

✅ Map out where you plan to walk or play with your dog and make sure there are plenty of places to rest in the shade and drink water.
✅ Know the signs of heat-related illness for your pet. For dogs, the most common symptoms are excessive panting, increased heart rate, vomiting and diarrhea.
✅ Never leave pets in a parked car, even if it's just for a few minutes.
✅ Test the pavement outside by holding the back of your hand to it. If it’s too hot for your skin, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws!
