Spokane renters: new disaster protections could be coming. 🏠

[Español abajo]👇

The Spokane City Council is considering a new ordinance that would give qualifying tenants additional protections from eviction and rent debt when a declared disaster or emergency causes a significant financial impact.

The proposed ordinance would:

• Protect qualifying tenants from eviction for emergency-related unpaid rent.

• Give qualifying tenants up to 12 months after the emergency ends to repay rent debt accrued during the protected period.

• Prevent eviction simply because a tenant is unable to repay that emergency-related debt during the repayment period.

• Create an ongoing framework for tenant protections during future disasters and declared emergencies.

Governor Ferguson’s current wildfire protections are a short-term emergency measure. The proposed city ordinance would create a longer-term framework for protecting Spokane tenants during disasters.

** The City Council is expected to present the ordinance tomorrow, Wednesday, August 26. A vote is expected soon. We’ll keep you informed as it moves forward. **

🏠 A disaster shouldn’t become a housing crisis, too.

Inquilinos de Spokane: podrían venir nuevas protecciones para desastres. 🏠

El Concejo Municipal de Spokane está considerando una nueva ordenanza que daría a los inquilinos que cumplan con los requisitos protecciones adicionales contra el desalojo y las deudas de alquiler cuando un desastre declarado u otra emergencia cause un impacto financiero significativo.

La ordenanza propuesta podría:

• Proteger a los inquilinos que cumplan con los requisitos contra el desalojo por alquiler no pagado debido a una emergencia.

• Dar a los inquilinos hasta 12 meses después de que termine la emergencia para pagar la deuda de alquiler acumulada durante el período de protección.

• Impedir el desalojo simplemente porque un inquilino no pueda pagar esa deuda relacionada con la emergencia durante el período de reembolso.

• Crear un marco continuo de protecciones para inquilinos durante futuros desastres y emergencias declaradas.

Las protecciones actuales del gobernador Ferguson relacionadas con los incendios forestales son una medida de emergencia a corto plazo. La ordenanza propuesta crearía un marco a más largo plazo para proteger a los inquilinos de Spokane durante los desastres.

** Se espera que el Concejo Municipal presente la ordenanza mañana, miércoles 26 de agosto. Se espera una votación pronto. Les mantendremos informados a medida que avance. **
