Over the Cascade Mountains and heading east and south, a visitor discovers a unique beauty – drier and cultivated with sustainable farm practices. Although wheat farming in Eastern Washington started in earnest in the 1880’s, it wasn’t until 1958 the state’s farmers saw the need for individuals to pool their resources to support the industry. That year, farmers created the Washington Wheat Commission and voted to pay an assessment on each bushel of wheat produced in Eastern Washington. On July 27, 2009, the Washington Wheat Commission merged with the Washington Barley Commission (established in 1985) to form the Washington Grain Commission. Today, through marketing, research, education and grower services, the Washington Grain Commission, under the direction of an eleven-member board, supports the work of over 3,000 farms in Washington State – nearly all of which are family-owned and operated.

The WGC joined other Washington commodity groups as a discussion moderator at FIRA's AgriTech Meetup this week.

FIRA, usually held in California, was in Washington for the first time this year. The event is focused on agricultural technology and innovation and was attended by companies and farmers from around the world.

During the AgriTech Meetup, growers, commodity-sector representatives, and Agtech companies sat together to discuss crop-specific challenges, field needs, and existing technological solutions and gaps.

Did you know that the world's longest recorded sandwich measured 2,411 feet, 5 inches, and was made in Lebanon in 2011? Or that PB&J sandwiches date back to at least 1901, when an early recipe appeared in a cooking magazine?

We're big sandwich fans over here, and great sandwiches start with good bread (in our humble opinion).

Hard wheat is commonly used for breads, bagels, and rolls, but the soft white wheat grown here in the PNW can be blended with those hard wheats to improve the texture and color of the bread.
