Spokane Public Library is a community of learning. We aim to inspire a thriving city through cultural and educational opportunities. We value:
Education | We connect our community with education, information and programming. Collaboration | We work together to create the best outcomes. Diversity | We include and celebrate Spokane’s diverse communities. Innovation | We take risks and drive change.

Customer Experience | We impress our customers with individualized service. Accountability | We use public funds responsibly. Land Acknowledgement:
All Spokane Public Library buildings sit on the traditional homelands of the four bands of the Spokane Tribe of Indians: Sntútʔulixʷi, Snxʷmeneʔi, Sc̓qesciłni, and Sčewíleʔ (Upper Band, Middle Band, Lower Band, Chewelah Band). Since time immemorial, the Spokane Tribe of Indians has lived and cared for these grounds. Identifying themselves as “sqélixʷ,” or “Flesh of the Earth.” We pay our respects to their Elders – past, present, and emerging. We show gratitude to the land, river, and peoples who have been fishing, hunting, harvesting, and gathering here for generations. May we learn from one another’s stories, so that we may nurture the relationship of the People of the Spokane Tribe and to all those who share this land.

Spokane Public Library stands with public libraries across the U.S. and Canada in supporting this call for change and collaborative solutions around eBook licensing.

Digital collections are essential for education, accessibility, and lifelong learning, helping libraries serve seniors, rural residents, students, and readers with disabilities. Yet libraries often pay significantly more for temporary access to eBooks and audiobooks, resulting in longer wait times and increased strain on public resources.

We support sustainable, equitable models that ensure libraries can continue providing access to digital content while supporting authors, publishers, and readers alike.

Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL) Urban Libraries Council Public Library Association (PLA)

ULC joins our peers at the Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL), the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA), Canadian Urban Libraries Council / Conseil des bibliothèques urbaines du Canada (CULC/CBUC), and the Public Library Association (PLA) to publicly call attention to the e-books pricing crisis and demand change from the largest publishers.

This effort matters because it sends a message that, as organizations advocating for and representing nearly all public libraries in the US and Canada – small and large, urban and rural, and everything in between – we stand united for change while open for dialogue, at a moment when states are turning up the pressure on publishers with legislative efforts.

We’re excited to bring our StoryBooth to Spokane alongside author Ken Baronsky for a special conversation around Zayde’s Crossing—a powerful story of faith, migration, resilience, and one family’s journey across continents to the Pacific Northwest. Drawing from family memories, oral histories, and archival records, the book highlights how storytelling helps preserve lives and histories that might otherwise be forgotten.

WSJHS staff will be on-site with our StoryBooth, collecting oral histories and preserving community stories for future generations. Stop by, say hello, and share your story with us.

Our community has THREE library systems? What's the difference?

If you’ve ever been confused about the difference between Spokane Public Library (that's us!), Spokane County Library District, and Liberty Lake Municipal Library … you are definitely not alone.

The good news? Even though you belong to one library system, local agreements allow many residents to still borrow physical materials from neighboring library systems, helping expand access across the region. Read more to learn which library your taxpayer dollars support! https://www.spokanelibrary.org/which-library-system-is-which/
