Friday, March 20 marks 20 years since Otto Zehm was taken from our community. His death at the hands of the Spokane Police Department remains a painful reminder of the urgent need for accountability and change in how law enforcement responds to calls for help.

Over the past two decades, community members and organizations have worked tirelessly to push for reform. We’ve seen progress, including behavioral health teams, dialogue teams, and the Office of the Police Ombuds, all of which have helped reshape responses to people in crisis. Under Chief Hall’s leadership, use-of-force incidents have decreased, and the City of Spokane went a full year without an officer-involved shooting.

But our work is not done.

Too often, calls for help still end in tragedy. Too many lives have been lost. We must continue to demand better for our community, for our loved ones, and for those who need care, not force.

Please join us on Friday, March 20 at 5:30 PM at Mission Park in Spokane as we gather to remember Otto Zehm and honor his life. Together, we stand for justice, accountability, and lasting change.
