Summer Safety Tip:

Don't leave items such as laptop computers, iPads, cell phones, cameras, etc. in a window of your house or apartment where someone walking by and looking for a "crime of opportunity" will see it.

GSCOPS has had a report of a screen on a door being sliced open and a burglary attempt, on the South Hill, in the vicinity of Lincoln and 22nd.

Summer Safety Tip:

It's great to have the doors and windows open day or evening to get a breeze through the house. But did you ever stop to think just how easy it would be to pop a screen out of a window or slice through a screen on a door?

It's unfortunate to think of someone doing just that. BUT as a safety tip we recommend that you do not leave doors and windows open unless you are around them.

A good example would be this: If you open your front yard windows (ground level) and then you are in the back yard watering the lawn or what not, a crime of opportunity presents itself to a burglar who is looking for just that. Just food for thought.

Be a good neighbor. If you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood, report it to Crime Check at 456-2233. Report a crime in progress by dialing 9-1-1.

Shared from the Spokesman Review:

Spokane County sheriff’s Deputy Mark Gregory has heard all of these stories and more from people who call the Sheriff’s Office for help.

The solution suggested by the callers is always the same: to put the money the person “owes” on a prepaid debit card and then provide the caller with the card number and PIN.

“There’s a common theme,” Gregory said.

No legitimate organization will ever ask for payment that way, Gregory said.

The phone rings and it’s your granddaughter, who says she’s been arrested and needs bail money. Or maybe it’s someone claiming to be from the IRS, who says you owe the government back taxes. It could even be from someone who says they work for Avista, telling you that your power will be shut off if…

Don’t get burned by summer scams
By Paul Muschick

Scams change with the seasons, and here are some you should watch for while you’re in summer mode.

This is when shady characters troll neighborhoods looking to pull off driveway paving or sealing scams. They’ll concoct some lame story about just finishing another job in the area and wanting to get rid of the extra materials they have. They’ll offer you a special price, then they’ll do a shoddy job, if they do anything at all. And your chances of catching up to them aren’t good, because they often don’t have signs on their trucks and are from out of town.

Two Bethlehem Township, Pennsylvania, homeowners got taken recently, according to an aide for a local state representative, where they had sought help.

Never hire a contractor or handyman who shows up at your door offering to do work. If you need to reseal or repave your driveway, get multiple bids from contractors and verify they are reputable by checking their background.

Summer also is when a lot of people are looking to make money. College students are home, teachers may be looking to earn some extra dough while they’re off, or maybe you just want to tuck some cash away for one last trip at the end of the summer.

If that’s the case, don’t fall for ads you see promising big bucks for working at home. They’re often scams, as a recent warning from the Federal Trade Commission explains. (Read it here: http://www.ncpw.gov/blog/work-home-job-going-pay?utm_source=govdelivery.)

Vacation scams also are hot at this time of the year. For recent advice from the Better Business Bureau, visit www.bbb.org/blog/2015/06/8-tips-for-avoiding-a-vacation-scam and www.bbb.org/blog/2015/05/fake-hotel-booking-websites-fool-travelers.

SAFETY FACTS

Approximately 70% of all children killed or injured by motor vehicles are struck within blocks from their own homes.

Speeding is the most common traffic rule violation and contributes to motor vehicle accidents every single day.

Children:

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 4 and every age 11-14(based on 2009 figures, which is the latest mortality data available from the National Center for Health Statistics).
An average of 3 children 14 and younger were killed and 462 were injured every day in the United States in motor vehicle crashes during 2012. (NHTSA)
Seventy-four percent of the pedestrian fatalities among the 14-and-younger age group occurred at non-intersection locations.

Pedestrians:

A pedestrian, as defined for this fact sheet, is any person on foot, walking, running, jogging, hiking, sitting, or lying down who is involved in a motor vehicle traffic crash.

In 2013, 4,735 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States. (NHTSA)
On average, a pedestrian was killed every 2 hours and injured every 8 minutes in a traffic crash.
There were 66,000 pedestrians injured in traffic crashes in 2013.

Pedalcyclists:

Pedalcyclists are riders of bicycles (two-wheel non-motorized cycles) and other cycles (tricycles and unicycles) powered solely by pedals.

A total of 726 pedalcyclists were killed and an estimated 49,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes in 2012. The 14-and-younger age group accounted for 8 percent (58) of those fatalities and 18 percent (9,000) were injured. (NHTSA)

Distracted Driving:

Distracted driving is a dangerous epidemic on America's roadways.

At any given daylight moment across America, approximatelyn 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving, a number that has held steady since 2010. (NOPUS -NHTSA)

In 2012 alone, 3,328 were killed in distracted driving crashes. An estimated 421,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver, this was a 9 percent increase from the estimated 387,000 injured in 2011. (NHTSA)

10% of drivers of all ages under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crash.

Drivers in their 20's make up 27% of the distracted drivers in fatal crashes.

Drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves. (Source: Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)

Using a cell phone while driving, whether it’s hand-held or hands-free, delays a driver's reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. (Source: University of Utah)

The number one killer of young people in America is car crashes, and the vast majority of these do not involve alcohol and drugs, but everyday reckless and distracted driving. Everyday behaviors such as putting on makeup, talking with friends, shuffling the music, or texting are things everyone does, but behind the wheel of a vehicle they can and often do become lethal.

2015’s Best and Worst States for Teen Drivers Tweet by Richie Bernardo Getting a driver’s license at 16 is considered a rite of passage in American culture.
